Let us know if Ivy's M/C sheds any light on this mystery please Maureen. It's one of these ones that gets under your skin and I would love to find out who Evelyn was. Reuben as well, where is he?

If the birth of Dorothy Sewell is correct, she was baptised as Ivy Dorothy Hood because living with William & Emma Hood? Perhaps Emma Sewell decided to adopt their name when she gave birth to Reuben? Have sent for Ivy's marriage certificate in hope may shed some light.

Assuming Emma Sewell in Derbyshire in 1901 is the right person - we don't see her after 1901.
And we don't see Evelyn Hood before 1911.
So no proof, but it seems that between1901 and 1911 she may have been transforming into Evelyn Hood, and giving birth to Reuben.
Although, if Ivy is her daughter, the name Hood was involved from the time of Ivy's baptism in 1894

John Lomas (visitor in the 1901 census) doesn't seem to be any relation, unfortunately - might have verified if she's the right Emma.

Thanks again Argyllgran! Looking promising - think definitely born 1868 as ties up with Marriage Cert to Joseph Gower (48) and death in 1944 at 76. Been trying to find Reuben Hood, the son, looked at Reuben Sewell but no answers.

Ancestry's transcription of the 1901 census you found, Maureen, gives a different YOB for Emma. There's a line through her age on the image, so it's hard to read accurately:
Emma Sewell in the 1901 England Census Name: Emma Sewell Age: 37 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1864 Relation to Head: Head Gender: Female Birth Place: Sheffield Civil Parish: Matlock Bath Ecclesiastical parish: Holy Trinity County/Island: Derbyshire Country: England Street address: Registration district: Bakewell Sub-registration district: Matlock ED, institution, or vessel: 14 Neighbors: Piece: 3267 Folio: 74 Page Number: 13 Household schedule number: 82 Household Members: Name Age Emma Sewell 37 John Lomas 11 - visitor, Sheffield Beatrice Goodwin 13 - servant

1901 looks very possible, Maureen.
I don't think the 1891 is correct.
She didn't have siblings Mary J or George H.
Her brother Henry married _
Henry James Sewell in the Surrey, England, Church of England Marriages, 1754-1937 Name: Henry James Sewell Gender: Male Age: 25 Birth Year: abt 1862 Marriage Date: 26 Dec 1887 Marriage Place: Thornton Heath, St Paul, Surrey, England Parish as it Appears: Thornton Heath Father: Thomas Henry Sewell (Horse collar maker) Spouse: Jane Bensley Reference Number: 2955/1/10
Both witnesses were Bensleys.
And here he is in 1891:
Henry James Sewell in the 1891 England Census Name: Henry James Sewell Gender: Male Age: 30 Relationship: Head Birth Year: 1861 Spouse: Jane Sewell Child: Henry Herbert Sewell Birth Place: Lambeth, London, England Civil Parish: Croydon Residence Place: Thornton Heath, Croydon, Surrey, England Sub registration district: Croydon ED, Institution or Vessel: 60 Neighbors: Piece: 596 Folio: 123 Household Members: Name Age Henry James Sewell 30 - horse collar maker Jane Sewell 30 Henry Herbert Sewell 1 6/12
He's with wife and children in Tilehurst in 1901.
The whole family later moved to New Zealand, and Henry died there in 1948..

Her sister Elizabeth disappears too:
Married:
Elizabeth Emily Sewell in the England, Select Marriages, 1538–1973 Name: Elizabeth Emily Sewell Gender: Female Marital Status: Single Age: 37 Birth Date: 1861 Marriage Date: 26 Mar 1898 Marriage Place: Parish Church, Parish of St. Mary'S, Co.of Reading Father: Thomas Sewell Spouse: John Isaac Warwicker (widower, 1853, father William) FHL Film Number: 1040617 Reference ID: I 441, P 28
Can't see either her or her husband after that.
(Looking to see if maybe Emma went to one of her older siblings when she left home, and might be listed under some unexpected name.)

Emma's brother Samuel escaped to Canada.
Married Charlotte Holmes 1901 Hackney - Samuel's father's name Tom. Had a daughter Mabel Beatrice Minnie, 1902, Hackney. Samuel went to Canada alone 1909 - occupation saddler. I don't see Charlotte and Mabel following him out there, but Mabel married Sidney Sharman in 1922 in Frontenac, Ontario. Samuel and Charlotte made a visit back to the UK in 1947, and then returned to Canada the same year. Samuel died 1951.
I'm not posting all the records, as it's not really relevant to this thread.

Very interesting, AG! Yes, an excellent reason for Emma to change her name, especially as she'd been named in the newspaper.
So, I wonder where she is in 1891 and 1901? I've been hunting for any Emma or Evelyn born c1868 Sheffield Bottom - but none look likely so far.
