Do you know they only had the one child,, or could the Daniel F Smith born 1919 and died in 1920 in Newport Monmouthshire have been there son. This would suggest he was still alive in 1918/19. Perhaps someone with more access to records could find his mothers name. |

Also ArgyllGran you can see from the 1939 census (it was free a couple of weeks ago on ancestry) that Mary Frances Fleming (Nelson) was born 1893 August 17th.....i'm inclined to believe that is correct. |

Have trawled through all the Daniel and D Smiths who died in WW1, on the CWGC website - and none of them is your Daniel. |

Thanks for checking ArgyllGran, it's a proper mystery isn't it? Can only assume some clues will come to light when the 1921 census is released :-) |

For that matter (although we know there are lots of mistakes in the 1939 register) here's no birth of a Mary Frances Fleming in Aug 1893, either, as stated in 1939 . |

I was just looking at Daniel Smith's daughters wedding record on the Scottish People's website and when she married Mr Arbuckle in 1937 it lists Daniel Smith as father deceased (boiler maker)......not sure when or where though. |

If I see Daniel Smith kicking about in the 1921 census that'll answer a few questions. |

Notes copied over to my tree under Daniel Smith. The census records certainly appear valid and the death record certainly possible. |

ArgyllGran I suspect like you I'll be waiting on the 1921 census to give clues to some of my family :-) |

Perhaps the 1914 marriage was bigamous, and Daniel changed his name and disappeared when he was found out ?? |

I'd surmise a different Daniel, Smith appears a very common name. The Daniel Smith who died in 1938 seems like a strong candidate for being Mary Frances Fleming's first husband. |
