Middy Report 4 Feb 2024 09:25

Good Morning

Would you be able to help to locate two children that I have had no joy in finding.

They are both on the 1901 Census - May Durrant (aged 10) and Victor Durrant (aged 7) both in the Workhouse at this point.

Their parents are Edward Ottaway Durrant & Celia Jane Whitehead.

If I can provide any more information, please let me know.

Many thanks for your time

Middy Report 20 Aug 2017 11:01

Hi Gwyn

Thank you so much for going to the library for me, so generous

Sorry I have not replied until today - I only really get time to look into this on the weekends as at work during the week

I have ordered the marriage certificate so hopefully that will confirm the definitive date.

I did receive the death certificate for Celia and the informant of her death was her daughter Beatrice A Durrant - but I can only really find her on the 1891 census, cannot find a birth?

Appears from the Census (if correct) she was born in 1884 approx and Celia (Cecilia) married Edward in 1885

Any help from anyone would be really appreciated :-)

Gwyn in Kent Report 14 Aug 2017 18:10

I went to Folkestone library this afternoon.
They have some Bishop's Transcripts for Newington, but they finish in 1870s so I wasn't able to check this marriage record.

The library holds actual filmed parish registers for many nearby villages and parishes, including St Leonards Hythe, so I'm happy to go back and look up any other information, which might be helpful for this family group.

One can freely view the original at Canterbury Cathedral Archives oneself.

I haven't been there for a while, but can easily access Folkestone, so will try there first.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 13 Aug 2017 18:37

That might be an idea, Gwyn. If they've a different set of scans. It might show it. Some of the date is too close the centre fold/binder.

Otherwise it would mean contacting Canterbury Archives who probably hold the original. As Archives normally charge for look-ups, the GRO version might be cheaper.

Gwyn in Kent Report 13 Aug 2017 17:30

I can go into Folkestone library and check the date on the PR image, if you want.............

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 13 Aug 2017 14:46

Should add - the date is unlikely to be 15 Mar 1885. Its partly obscured by the centrre fold.
The 4 dates on the double page (Middy was sent a cropped version) are
30 May 1885
26 Jul 1885
15 ??? 1885 <<<
27 ??? 1886

It's possible the Durrant marriage was in Nov.

1901 Dover Union Workhouse.
Group of 5 stated as "Brother and Sisters (4)"
Just because Victor and Olivia both show as 7yrs does not necessarily mean that they were twins.
Consider at the pattern of the 5 stated birth places. Looks as if the family were moving between Dover & Folkestone?

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 6 Aug 2017 19:42

I'm not seeing a birth for Victor.

The 1901 census shows differing birthplaces.......
