I was given a book for Christmas about breaking down brick walls, and one of the things it mentioned, which I didn't know, was that smallpox vaccination became compulsory for children in 1853, and this created a paper trail with details of both the child and parents.

The book didn't specify where these records were held, but google came up with this site, which looks useful for other things as well.
