perhaps I didn't explain myself well enough - no 451 comes up on FMP.

Yes, both numbers come up on freebmd, I'm not arguing that. If you click on 451 or 457 on freebmd Harriett can be found amongst the other Grantham births for June 1867 but with a different set of other names depending on the reference number. If you click on 451 or 457 from this point you only get back to 457 on the scanned original register, so obviously 451 has been wrongly transcribed (by zoer).

Interesting the scan to view second item did not come up as when I first copied it.

Think it may have to do with the area of baptism is on the border of 2 areas.

Hello,wow,I have only just seen all the latest posts,I didn't realise there was Page 2.
The reason for the closed entry,on the census,I think,is because my grandmother had a son,before she married Henry Moseley,he was brought up thinking that his grandmother,Harriett Crosby,nee Bend,was his mother.

Harriett was my great grandmother,9th May 1867,Easthorpe,Bottesford,Denton,Lincoln and Leicester.Reg District,Grantham.Her death cert,10th April,1961,she was 93years,I was born 1948,so I remember her very well.I have a book of quotes and copied poems, written by Harriett,inside page it is written,Miss H.Bend,,Borough Asylum,Humberstone,Leicester,1888,she worked there as an attendant and,I think,met Joseph Crosby.They moved to a mental hospital in Nottingham.I have a letter addressed to him asking him to start work,he did his RMPA training there,they moved to Saxondale Hospital and both worked there.His Death Cert,27th April,1926.I have his RMPA cert and badge and photo's.Really grateful to everybody who have taken their time to help research. It looks to me as if Emily lied about her marital condition on the birth registration and "made up" a father and surname for her child, but perhaps felt she had to be honest in church when having her son baptised.

Lysons Road in Aldershot is still there and is reasonably close to the railway station and the Register Office.

Not finding records for a George or Gervase Lincoln born Ludham in the military in the 1890s - the nearest I got was a George Lincoln born Attleborough, but I think that's too far away.

Not that Gervase was described as a soldier on his son's birth cert, but if he was discharged at Aldershot he might have hung around in the area.

to set my own mind at rest .....

Legalised adoption did not (added by editing!!) come into effect until mid 1927, so there are unlikely to be any records of Henry's adoption ..........

It does look from the records found so far that he was adopted as a tiny baby, certainly before October 1898 when he was baptised as Henry Moseley.

There could be a connection between his mother and the Moseley's, or it might be a matter of as third party adoption, through a church, orphanage, or some other society.


It looks more and more as though finding his birth father is unlikely ........ it might be one of the Elwes family, but doubtful that there is any way to prove it!!

His mother could have said she was married, and given any name she liked to the Registrar ........ you did not have to produce any documentation to provide that what you said was true. I think you still do not have to do that!
