Jacqueline, could be right. I know my grandmother's family were strict Catholics, and there is rumour further down the line that my grandfather converted to the Catholic faith to marry my gran (who was Susannah' Kemp's great-grandaughter). |

As the children were baptised C of E, and Hugh's mother was Irish, perhaps he was R C, and therein lay a problem with regards to marrying |

thanks everyone for the posts. I already had all the above info thanks. I find it hard to believe that a couple living in a big religious city like Liverpool in the 1860s would baptise their 6 children and not bother to get wed. I know it's possible of course.. I think I need to expand my search beyond Liverpool! |
