Have found a more complete marriage listing for John Blackburn & Elizabeth Nicholl on family search.org which has his father listed as David Blackburn! May be wasting everyone's time looking for William Blackburn! Sorry folks, any suggestions on David Blackburn ......

Thank you all. William can be found probable birth date marriage bonds and death plus the 1841 and 1851 census. But the wife? Only the 1841 C has her as Ann. The marriage in 1828 to Jane Deighton may well be another William Blackburn - there are certainly lots of them about and children don't always have to be born on the right side of the marriage, but it seems odd that it has him as born in Whitby as in the 1851 C - probably too much of a coincidence?
May be I am looking at completely wrong Blackburns and need to revisit this. I have traced the family line to John Blackburn b. 1831 Stockton who married Elizabeth Nicholl b. 1832 in Yorkshire. I have births, deaths and marriage for them. Plus their children's births show them as parents and the census all tie in. I have gone with this William Blackburn as his father because the son John works in the 1841 and 1851 census but this could be wrong. It is John and Elizabeth's daughter, Elizabeth Jane Blackburn that married Robert Chisholm who is my husbands great great grandfather. As there are so many Blackburns around the area I may have to look for another possible father for a John Blackburn b around Stockton in 1831 ( plus or minus a year to allow for census round ups)
Oh to be looking for a family with a unique name!
:-D

HIs birth year is recorded as 1797 in 1851, which means that in 1841, it was rounded down, as was the norm.

You need to be looking for a marriage BEFORE 1821, bearing in mind the info about children on 1841 census.

.............the eldest could have been born as early as 1816

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 3 May 2015 11:50

The border between Northumberland and Durham has always been the River Tyne

Stockton is on the river Tees

BeverleyW Report 3 May 2015 08:44

There are a lot of William Blackburns in the area.
It looks like William and Ann's first child was born in 1821 so the 1828 marriage is probably someone else.

Familysearch has a lot of images of Durham records which are not yet transcribed. Unfortunately there are hundreds to browse through. Just looking at marriages for 1820 there are over 700. If you have a few hours to spare you might find something useful!!!!!!

That's interesting, the marriage bond in the Durham records is for the same year but for Stockton. I am a bit confused as to the county borders in those days between Northumberland and Durham.
This marriage is to Jane Deighton.
The 1841 census has the wife as Ann?
The first child, Jane was born in 1821 the second, William in 1827. Not that that matters!
Can find no other records for daughter Jane but son William married and had a family so I have traced him.
May be he had two wives!!!! He is alone with 3 sons in the 1851 C but still calls himself married. No trace of Ann after 1841.

Thank you have been looking at the Durham records online but hoping to get my facts lined up before buying the credits, this tracing your ancestors is getting expensive :-D
That sounds like the right William for both the bonds and birth of Elizabeth. Will now have to have a look for a Hewson - possibly his mothers name?
Thanks

Thank you all. Had found the 1841 census with wife Ann and the 1851 with just William and 3 sons.
Son John b 1831 I have traced as he is our direct line. Have found William married to Isabel and a miner in Northumberland. Michael became a butcher married to Susannah and lived at Paradise St Stickton until he died in 1899.
Haven't found much on the other children.
