The Green and Greener surnames could just be a mistake by the registrar - perhaps he didn't quite hear the surname properly. |

I think you may have the wrong birth certificate for the first child. |

the certificate i have for sarah ann is 23 october 1847 . i did see ann in the 1851 census born 1847 but i thought it was sarah ann 1847 |

I would buy the birth certificate for Ann born 1847 and see if the mother's maiden name is Green or Greener. If so I would think it was the correct certificate. |

yes i will do that .. but i know i have correct family through the census ,s and martha 1852 married thomas grahm who was present at death of ann in 1874 so if ann in 1851 census must of been born january 1847 because sarah ann was born october 1847 |

Not sure what you mean about Ann having to be born January, as the birth reference for the Ann Hutchinson born in 1847 says registered quarter 2 - which means registered in April/May/June so the earliest she could have been born would be the middle of February as you only have 6 weeks to register a birth. |

what i ment was in 1861 , 1871 and onwards it is always sarah ann 1847 even when she married and on the birth certificate i have for sarah ann born october 1847 , and the ann you have which i also have in 1851 census was born first quarter 1847 so if ann in 1851 census is same as sarah ann 1847 parents william potter wife ann scotland how can that be possable |

Ah, I see now that you have Sarah Ann Hutchinson in the 1861 census. In which case perhaps the birth certificate you have for her is still wrong (as the mother's maiden name is wrong) and perhaps your Sarah Ann wasn't registered at all. Lots of births were not registered right up until 1875 when penalties were introduced for not registering. |

I think the only explanation is that the registrar at the time made a mistake with the mother's maiden name. Is the certificate you have a copy of the original (i.e. written in the old handwriting) or is it a copy that has been typed out or written out more recently? |

Is it a photocopy, or an actual handwritten cert? If the latter, it will be a newly written copy. If a photocopy, it's likely to be a copy of the original handwritten cert. |
