Thank you. I have seen this census so think it probably is my grandma.Can't wait for the marriage cert to arrive to confirm ! As for nan's death, I've looked everywhere and couldn't find it! Can you please tell me how you found it Lynn from up North? I must be doing something wrong somewhere. I put Catherine Davis Death 1968 give or take 1 yr in search boxes and selected deaths from left hand box. I got 73 matches but not the info you have found!?
One question for all you experts out there:- Is it best to follow one person back at a time? ie should I concentrate on the Davis's first for instance? As soon as spouses are involved it starts to get mind boggling. Just wondered how everyone else handles the information.Thank you x

Update: The marriage certificate has arrived for my paternal grandparents John Davis and Katherine McGregor. Married 25th December 1913. Grandad was a general labourer as was his father, another John Davis who was deceased by the time of the marriage. Katherine's father was also a general labourer called Charles McGregor.
Through the census, I thought I had found Katherine's birth as 18/03/1895 and her death as March 1968, (although spelled Catherine) showing her father as Charles. However, the marriage certificate says she was 20 years old! I cannot find another Catherine or Katherine born in 1893! I did find a census for Charles that showed a spouse from Ireland and I know my grandma's mum was Irish, ( but I've lost my notes on this!) I'm therefore sure that I had the right Catherine. Also, I cannot find a birth, census or death entry for John Davis, the elder! Totally stumped on how to proceed already! Any advice please? T.I.A.

I wouldn't take everything written on a marriage certificate as gospel. People often lied - especially about ages.

My grandfather's age is 3 years out and my grandmother's age is 5 years out - making what was actually a 19 year age gap appear to be only 11 years.

As well as that a "deceased" father named on a marriage certificate was often to cover up the fact that the person in question was actually illegitimate and trying to save face in front of the "in-laws".

Are you still looking for the census with your grandmother on ? If not I think I have found them and her birth. She is aged 6 and 16 respectively on the census with father Charles and mother born Ireland.

WHAT AGE WAS YOUR GRANDAD WHEN HE MARRIED?

FreeBMD is essentially complete for deaths thru 1973q2, but there are no complete quarters for deaths after this. If he died after 1969q1, then the index will give his d.o.b. (if the informant knew it). I've found the b'day is nearly always correct, but the year can be a wee bit off.

Abt a quarter of the 1960s quarters for Bs & Ds are not complete.
The earlier incomplete quarters are:

Pre-1899, non-conformists (exc jews & quakers) weren't authorized to keep official marr registers, so the registrar would have to attend such marrs with his register for the couple to sign. After 1898, non-conformists could apply to be authorized to keep official marr rego's, but the RCs chose not to until 1980-ish.
A rego office marr was a non-denominational civil ceremony. RCs got wed the rego office, or their local RC church, which would have been an approved, registered building. In either case, the m.rego would have been done by a registrar. In 1913, abt 60% of English and Welsh marrs took place in the established church, and 21% in the rego office, but there was condiderable variation - in Wales, the figures were 31% and 38%, in the 4 N counties of England, they were 52% and 26% - in London, they were 58% and 28%.

Thank you Lynda and Mgnv. I have both my grandparents now and have moved onto my great grandfather, would you believe another John Davis! He died aged 44. I now need to find his parents and my great grandmother's re marriage, if indeed she did re marry. Do you know what the pay per view credits are on here? Also, how do I view parish records as I paid extra on my subs for this?

If you look at the top of the Genes page there is a line starting with gifts next to it is pay per view click on that and it will give the details of the options available. On the same line at the very end it says search click on there and the records available will be shown .For example If you are looking for a birth click on there and the records that are available for different counties will be shown.
Do you have more information about your grandfather and great -grand father nothing to go on at the moment? Year place of birth ect.

Died 1899 in Whitechapel , London although I have not definitely confirmed this is the right John Davis!

Now stuck as I believe my great grandmother may have re married and have not found my great grandads parents yet.

Wow Lynda! How did you find this so quickly? I obviously cannot be going about this the right way. Can you give me a brief step by step guide as to how you would go about finding info please? Only if you have time. If my great grandad DID die in 1899, the death entry says his birth year was 1855 so not sure about the 22 April 1854 bit. You could well be right as there are so many John Davis's. How did you get the mother and father's names? Do you have some extra subs on your membership? Thank you so much for your help.

No idea why you do not have pay per view option at top . I am only returning to this site after a few years away . The other way to find them is by click on account
Then on the left hand side you have account details
click on check credit detail
Then just to the right it says credits available to buy more credits click here.
You should then be able to purchase some

The categories available come up pick which one you want
Put information in search boxes
You will then get possible records come up .
Iwhen you find a record that you wish to view there are the small boxes to the far right of record you can view transcription or original.

Family search.org
Freebdm.org.uk for births deaths marriages
Freereg.org.uk for parish records
Some counties have on-line parish clerks OPC's . So for example type into google opc for Sussex and you will get your options come up. Also some Parishes have records on- line just try google and see what turns up. Sometimes you can be lucky !!!
I use Ancestry at the moment for my own research.
Birth years can vary . One year difference is common it depends when the birth date fell . Some people did not know when they were born some lied about their age. I have a great grandfather who was 26 years older than his second wife . He frequently knocked 10/ 15 years off that is why if you are having trouble finding someone one a census expand the search years they are not always recorded as you would expect.
With death records sometimes the person registering the death did not know when that person was born so took a guess at their age. So not all records will be exactly as you would want them to be.
