Still can't find Esau's return to UK though.

Does Anthony Adolph charge GR for this service or does he use it to get business for himself ?

He's a professional genealogist with his own business. I doubt that he does anything for free.

Perhaps you should be getting paid for the service of letting folks know that they have replies, Cynthia. I for one really appreciate it but I doubt that GR does.

Cyn's help in letting people know they have replies is very much appreciated by the members ........ I have seen the gratitude expressed by many for her help.

his name is given correctly in the Canadian government database of Home Children ... that one is free to search and very accurate and should always be used instead of Ancestry (or at least alongside Ancestry)
(same for WWI Canadian soldiers)

Thanks for confirming my previous post about Esau's Home Child record Joonie. Always good to have verification.

The problem is, Joonie - so many people do not read any guidelines at all.

Also, the ' Watched Threads' facility has been known to be very hit and miss at times. I always advise folk to us 'My Threads' when they return here. :-)

definitely My Threads too of course, I always say the same as the first line of defence, and the posting instructions should clearly say both ... not in some random pinned thread that no one will ever read, but right *in your face* when you start a thread !

but if someone is not a regular visitor and a new person replies to their thread a year from now, Watched Threads could get them an email that will get their attention :-)

I've found it to be working okay for the last little while ... but then my Inbox worked fine for a year and then thwarted me (as everybody else's did) this week :-S

If I remember correctly (and if I don't someone else sure will!) about a couple of years back GR launched a "pop-up" that appeared when people started a new thread - it gave guidelines similar to those in the "Help Clinic".

It didn't seem to last long but I actually thought it was a good idea ......

My 4 x Grandmother, Ann Mayhew (nee Hill) and her children appear in the censuses of 1841 to 1881, with the exception of 1861 (No trace of them despite extensive searching). In 1871 & 1881 all are shown as born in various parts of London.

However, in the 1851 Census, for "Where Born" each family member is shown as "British Subject". This seems rather strange. No one else on that page of the Census is designated in that way. Is this just eccentric recording/form filling or is there some other significance in this ?
