Hi. I'm really hoping you can help me. My great grandfather was Herbert Arthur George DOUCH b:1911 in Bethnal Green. That was the only concrete information my nan was able to give me. She also told me that her nan's name was Eliza and that Eliza was widowed, did re-marry and go on to have 2 more children. Looking at Herbert's birth record it shows mother's maiden name as DENNY. I have searched and searched for marriage records linking Eliza Denny with the surname DOUCH to no avail. I've searched census records but I can't link any DOUCH's with my great grandfather. As he was born in late 1911 he doesn't show on any census.
Any ideas how I can try to work this out? I'm fairly new to this and I have tried so many searches and different ways of looking at the info I have found, but nothing seems to fit! I've traced my mums side of the family rather easily compared to this! I would appreciate any suggestions as to what I can do to try to find Herbert DOUCH'S parents. Thank you

Thank you for your replies. I am very new to this! I didn't realise a marriage cert will show fathers name. I will have to order one. Shirley, I found that record too. The one thing I'm so confused about is that I cannot find a marriage record for a Denny (hIs mothers maiden name) and a Douch anywhere. My nan is sure they were married!

I think the possible marriage in 1909, which has a name missing, could be the one to match 1911 census posted

BUT I think she was Eliza Thorne and not Denny

Looks like you need to buy some certs

My nan said Herbert's father died during WW1 and Eliza remarried and went on to have 2 more children. So I don't think he died in 1936. This family is so confusing!

I wonder if she had perhaps been married before???


Denny would then be her maiden name as shown on the birth registration, but it might not be mentioned on the marriage.

The other daughter Helen looks to have died in 1908

Not seeing a marriage for Eliza and William... Maybe they did not marry? A large age gap maybe he was already married and she just took his name?

I also cannot see a marriage for William Thorne and Eliza!


On that 1901 Census, she says she was born in Hoxton ..................

By 1935 Eliza is living at 53 Newington Green, Islington, with Henry William Thorne and Rose Thorne. No sign of Herbert Alfred.

They were at same address in 1934 - but he is recorded as Herbert Alfred Rueben Douch??
