Thanks you two. Lot's to look at. Mind blowing.
No doubt I'll be asking more questions. :-)

Go to: https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND If you browse down the following link: England, Durham Diocese B...'s Transcripts, 1639-1919 > Durham > Whickham > 1835-1853 > Image 32 of 357 you'll see the image for the record safc posted at 21:29 - well, almost. Safc's post is an extract from the parish register - this image is from the Bishop's transcripts (which were the church's own back-up copies). [I am also descended from a family of keel boatmen - in my case, they operated from the Ouseburn, 1km below the Tyne bridge, rather than Dunston, 2km above the bridge.]
One generally cannot see the GRO records for free - the only free info is from the GRO index (and the local index, when this is available, e.g., via: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd in particular, here: http://www.northeastbmd.org.uk/ NB - the local index doesn't always have the same info as the GRO index - of course the refs differ, but there's info in the local ref). However, for CofE marrs, the GRO only has a copy of the church's official register. Completed original church rego's are usually deposited in some archive - typically the county records office. Some of these rego's have been imaged and sometimes transcribed, and these are often online. GR/FMP have some from Co Durham. The Durham BTs I referred to above usually don't have marrs post-1837 online, but they might be transcribed by FS at: https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1473015

If I click on the "Gateshead" link, then the more info "here" link, I get: GATESHEAD REGISTRATION DISTRICT Registration County : Durham. Created : 1.7.1837. Sub-districts : Gateshead, Gateshead First, Gateshead Second, Heworth, Whickham, Winlaton. GRO volumes : XXIV (1837–51), 10a (1852–1946), 1A (1946–74). Registers now held by : Gateshead.
followed by the villages, etc in Gateshead RD, and how boundary changes affected them.
Marriages Jun 1862 (>99%) Bell Elizabeth Newcastle T 10b 90 Cairns Margaret Newcastle T 10b 90 Noble Blackbird Newcastle T. 10b 90 Wilkinson John Newcastle T 10b 90
Here's a local search at Gateshead: MATTHEW NOBLE Born: Q4 1862 Register: WHK9\341
Thomas NOBLE Born: Q3 1867 Register: WHK12\18
Blackbird NOBLE Born: Q2 1870 Register: WHK13\251
Now a local index has to say which subdistrict they were rego'ed in, as well as what rego they appear in, so we may guess that WHK is Whickham (and they're in Whickham rego # 9/12/13). the last item in a local ref is an entry or page #. Here it's an entry # as there were 500 entries in a local rego, but only 100 pages (250 pages for marrs). Marrs nearly always use entry #s, so one can match who wed whom.
Here's a N/c look up: 1862 NOBLE Blackbird 1862 BELL Elizabeth Marriage venue - St John the Baptist Register No./Entry No. EJD22/284
It's often tricky to guess which church a code like EJD stood for, but here they translate it for you. Codes with RO in them are usually the registrar's own register for rego office marrs, and non-conformist churches that weren't authorized to keep an official rego. This would be almost all non-conformists, pre-1898, but RCs weren't authorized until (I think) the 1980s. Jews were authorized, and usually have a church code beginning with J or S, and Quakers, whose code usually began with Q or F.

I forgot to mention. The marriage to Annie was his 2nd one as the first one died we think.
Don't know if this make a difference or not.
|
Hi,
Thanks for replying.
In answer to all queries.
The marriage is from1908 in Crawcrook, which was classed as Durham back then.
The name of the person is Thomas Noble born approx 1867. The marriage I have was to Annie Glaister.
The issue I have is there is a family who's head is blackbird noble. I don't think this is the line I am looking for and that was what I was trying to prove or rule out.
On another note. What do you do when the person you are looking for does not seem to exist before the marriage. The person in question is my great grandfather, he was born in about 1920 so to young for census. any suggestions for this one will be very much appreciated.
Thank you again.

I'll let Elaine knows that she has reply to her query. :-)

The fathers name will only be mentioned if known or in some cases invented

You can look at the GRO index free on freeBMD. Some parish marriage records are free to view online.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if there is a way of finding details on a marriage record without having to buy one.
I'm trying to locate the parent of the husband and wondered if I could get this without the marriage certificate.
Thanks.
