Hi Fiona, what a sad story. Poor Harry not being acknowledged by his mother.
I think we're all having a problem with the 1901 as well.

Hi You lot are brilliant! Thanks for all that research We thought that harry crawford might be his father and contacted descendants of the Crawfords in edinburgh. They were not interested in doing a DNA test and sent me photos of Harry who did not look a bit like my husband's grandfather. Harry did not go to US with his Mum and was left in the poor house in Perth.I can find only 1 entry for him in 1904 in the poorhouse records when he was sent out to work on a local farm till he was around 14 yrs Yes fiona on the NZ newspaper thing is me.We arrived back in Perth in 2012. Betsy/Elizabeth's parents were John Campbell and Janet/Jessie Craigdallie. On her Birth cert her name was Betsy but on other records she was known as Elizabeth/Lizzie and even Bessie. The GI's we don't know their names.Harry's daughter in law is still alive but can't remember anything. There are no letters from Betsy to her son Harry left as he destroyed them. She never saw her son again and when the GI's came over he was told to say he was Betsy's cousin as she had not told her new children about him :-D

Thanks but unfortunately it doesn't help with Bessie. :-(
Wish the poster would come back on and tell us who her parents were.
Looking at the article again, I think that Fiona is possibly the wife of Alec and so they are the contributers to that article. NZ is probably asleep at this time so will wait till later for a reply.
By the way, Bessie is called Elizabeth on Harry's birth certificate. She is a domestic servant at 3 Merchant Street, Edinburgh.

You need to determine the woman's exact first name. It should be on her son's birth cert

hi My husbands grandfather is illegitimate and the son of Betsy/Lizzie/Elizabeth Campbell (born 1879 Perth Uk) His name was Henry Crawford Campbell born 1899 Edinburgh She moved to US around 1903-1910 and married a Tait but we can find no record of them. She had more sons who came over to visit Perth as GI's in the WW2. Any ideas where to go from here, have tried passenger lists and US census up to 1940,no joy Thanks Fiona
