I was wondering that myself Shirley. His father was german and he had a german sirname: Tiencken. I thought he might have changed it WW1 time as a lot of german people did back then. But that is 16 years after he disappeared. I can't find any death record for him, and I've looked at variation of spellings. Can't find him on the 1901 census, there is a Mr Tiencken in Bloomsbury on the 1911 census but it just says 'Mr Tiencken' and gives the address - no other information!
I'll keep looking.

My paternal grandfather was German he and one of his brothers changed their names from Fahse to Fasey and that was my dads surname from 1907
I have the grt grans death in 1907 but after the 1901 census no sign of the other brothers or my grt grandfather other than on the grt grans death certs showing he was living with the DIL who was Fasey. The widow of the other brother who adopted that name .
I have found .or not found! Lol. It very difficult to trace German ancestors after 1901

Certainly looks a possibility it's an apartment over a shop

Did an address search but nos 39 isn't listed goes 37 and then 41

Looked on actual census sheet and nos 39 is listed as unoccupied

Do you have Ancestry as there are several spelling adjustments done on the family by a Carol Appleyard

I've found this family before Shirley, can't find any connection to my TIencken's though. Must be a common name in Germany. Carol Appleyard is my sister, and I do have access to her Ancestry site. Like me she can't find George Tiencken after 1893. But all these answers to my question have spurred me on and I'll keep digging.
