For our info only

Marriages Dec 1919 (>99%)
Sherretz Leonard C Weston Wokingham 2c 1237
Weston Florence B Sherrets Wokingham 2c 1237

As you have found, nothing remotely relevant is jumping off the screen

If you are in a position to do so, would you consider purchasing the MC?

As you've referred to Florence Weston as THE Florence Weston, presumably the artist, have you been able to find an online biography for her? If nothing else, it could rule her out.

I had a look at the newspaper archive last night, it looks to me as if the text has been OCR'd and then not edited so searches are a bit iffy.

I did a search anyway and it either turned up thousands or nothing. Maybe I need to learn to drive the search engine better!

I mentioned Leonard G Sherretz earlier in this thread, I found on GR and freebmd a marriage between him and Florence Weston in 1919.

There are no other entries in freebmd or GR for Sherretz, should I take this to imply (or suggest) that Sherretz was a visitor to the UK? Might there be other explanations? Might there be evidence in the shipping records?

No harm in trying, was there? :-)

Re the newspapers - if something was published in a British paper, try http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/
Although Platinum sub in Genes does include access, the search engine on the BNA is far better.

Should you find something that appears relevant from the preview, if you post full details on here someone might be able to access it for you through their GR sub.

No idea about Argentinian papers, presumably for the British community. Have you tried an internet search?

Thanks Detective, it certainly looks like an address of passage , so probably a dead end for me.

Re 112 Savernake Rd London NW3

The previous indexed entry on Ancestry for that address is for 1915 when only the males were enfranchised. The Electoral Roll might be there but with either the address not transcribed, or done so badly by a machine.

(just checked - 1930 is there, but there are over 1000 images to have to scroll through)
Ok – think I’ve found it, but the ER have the road named as Belmont St.
Of course, it could be that the Large family and M Bailey just happened to live in different road but at the same numbered house!

112 Belmont St, St Pancras
Ernest Large
James Large
Elizabeth Large
Matilda Bailey

I rather think that the house was let as rooms or as two or more households.

1933

Rose Ada Kynaston
Frederick John Thompson
Dorothy May Thompson
Edwin John Tooley
Rosalie Gertrude Tooley

1934
Frederick John Thompson
Dorothy May Thompson
Eva May Emmett
Robert Johnson
Marjorie Sarah Johnson
Ellen Catherine Mills

Thanks again, Chris, that census for the Bates family makes another link for me, Frank was staying with relations, now I just need to tease out what the relationship was ...

KeithG

KeithG Report 9 Jan 2014 09:30

Ah, so it looks as if the "Douton" for Frank Chapman was mis-transcribed and should be Overton?

KeithG Report 9 Jan 2014 09:23

Thanks for the sailing data patchem.

How can I find out more about the address given for Florence:

From 112 Savernake Road London NW3

in the late 20s / early 30s? No census, can you search electoral rolls by address? Any other thoughts?

I found a Florence Weston who married Leonard G SHERRETZ 1919, I'd like to see if this is the same person.

Thanks Chris. 327 played an important role, sadly it's now disappeared under redevelopment. Frank had a thriving business doing the laundry for boats in the docks, but with the decline of the docks so went the business.

Thanks for the inbound sailing. And also for the census. I'm fairly sure I've seen the census before but I hadn't noted the (I assume) birthplace for Frank - Douton Hampshire - am I interpreting that correctly?

KeithG Report 9 Jan 2014 08:52

Now isn't that interesting, Sylvia, thank you very much for making those searches. So that puts Arthur and Florence on the same boat BA -> UK in 1934. Coincidence? For the moment I think I'll work on the basis that they were together at this point and see what else I can dig up.

So the question is, what happened then? Looks as if Arthur went back to the Argentine a year later, 1935, without Florence.

Which returns also to the original question, how can I find out about things that happened on the Argentine?

JoonieCloonie - thanks for the additional sailing for Edith, I'd like to see the details if someone can find them please. I have her born in 1889.

I'm not sure of the connection with Matilda Bailey, Detective, is it maybe the similarity in sound of Lizzie Jane Farr?

Searching at findmypast, all the voyages for Arthur that you found are there.

Searching for an Edith Chapman travelling with an Arthur Parr to Argentina, there is the voyage in 1925 to Buenos Aires that you have seen.

There is also a voyage for Edith Chapman, not accompanying Parr, in 1945. She was born abt 1895, but might have got younger (a nice round 50) as she aged. :-)

I don't subscribe for the details but someone here can probably check it for you.

There are two voyages for the name Florence Weston to Buenos Aires, 1930 for a Florence born abt 1894 and 1935 for a Florence born abt 1891. Not accompanied by a Parr, but the passenger details might tell something.
