Thanks for all the advice. Now, How do I go about looking at Herbert Barber's Military record. He had his foot blown off in the second world war, but I can't find any one from Ashton registering with that name and close birth date. There is a Herbert Barber, who registered in Oldham, but he seemed to have seen service in South Africa, which My Mum doesn't recollect any history of. He was also married to someone who was not Harriet Long, although I suppose that he may have had an earlier marriage. Wouldn't an injury show up in the records?

WW2 military records are not available online. Your Mum would have to apply for them. If your Herbert served in WW2 he is unlikeyl to have been the man born in Ashton.
EDIT
The Herbert who served in South Africa (The Boer War) is this man who can't be your Herbert.
BARBER, HERBERT
Rank: Private Service No: 5665 Date of Death: 07/07/1915 Age: 42 Regiment/Service: Lancashire Fusiliers 2nd Bn. Panel Reference Panel 33. Memorial YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL
Additional Information:
Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Son of Harry and Sophia Barber; husband of Ada Clara Smith (formerly Barber), of 411, Featherstall Rd., Oldham. Served in the South African Campaign.
And on his enlistment his occupation is "Labourer"
Name: Herbert Barber Age at Enlistment: 29 Birth Parish: Oldham Birth County: Lancashire Regimental Number: 8385 Regiment Name: Manchr Regiment Number of images: 9
If you wish to research further, you really do need the marriage certificate otherwise everything is just pure guesswork.
Do you know if Herbert or his wife had any siblings please?
Do you know when Herbert or Harriet died please? Are any of the deaths posted on page 1 of the thread correct please?

Hi roots Thank you for all the hunting you have done on my behalf. The marriage in 1916 on page 1 is correct. Herbert died about 1971, and Harriet around 1970. (They died within a year of one another, Harriet first.) I couldn't work out why he should describe himself as a labourer. I wondered if he might have been married previously, and lost his first wife, as Mum insists that there was an 11 year gap between their ages. However, there is no family history of that. Grandpa had a derisory military pension, and a built up boot following his discharge from the army. I think that seeing his record may be quite emotional! Liz

Sorry, I forgot to tell you of his siblings and Father's name. He had sisters Edith b. 1883 and Gertrudeb 1886, and another sibling, Mum thinks was a boy, but we don't know his name. May be William, as Mum remembers an uncle Will. His father was William Thomas Barber, and she disliked him, as he used to make fun of her dad, calling him "That cripple" due to his foot. I think his wife may have been a Margaret Ann.

That's all good then Liz. It looks like the correct deaths on page 1. It also looks like the correct family on the census records (page 1) for Herbert. He was a butcher and so was his father William Thomas and also his grandfather Thomas. He also had a sister Gertrude (see the possible marriage for her at the top of this page).
Only a small percentage of WW1 service records have survived and it looks like your Herbert's are among those that haven't.
I don't think, in fact I am fairly certain that the records for Herbert that are on Ancestry (the man from Oldham who married Ada) are not your grandfather's but for a different Herbert.
The 1891 census shows that Herbert did indeed have a brother William.
Here is brother William in 1911 - he's also a Butcher!

Wow Roots. How do you do it? I am extremely interested to see that Mum's uncle Will was married to a woman whose father was a pilot, as Mum has mentioned a pilot for Liverpool docks in her ancestry. She has a Whale tooth, which was carved with a picture of a sailor, and a ship by this person. Apparently many sailors did this. Now all I need to do is enter the info on the tree. I don't suppose there is an easy way to do this. What a shame that Grandpa Barber's military record has been lost. I would have been interested to see where he was etc. Thanks again Liz
