One last question at the moment, as I should be doing my own research, though it is great to be helped so much.

Where do you suggest the best place to look in Ireland for James McConnell, Irish records. My uncle did some research before he died. But in the info you have sent the wife is different and I am more inclined to go with your records as my uncle did not look too hard. I also think his info may be wrong as I cannot find the place he says William came from (Agatammry in the Doocesse of Cloghan, Monaghan. I think it may be spelt wrong?

Any how a tip where to look in Irish books would help.
thanks so much.

Sorry Joanne,

I don't know anything about Irish records so I can't help with that. I think there are some Irish census records online. You could Google to see if you can find anything.

This looks like James and Ada's marriage:

Marriages Mar 1882 (>99%)

KERBY Ada Elizabeth Farnham 2a 131 Scan available - click to view
MCCONNELL James Farnham 2a 131

Census shows a Ada E Kerby born same time and place as Ada in the 1891.

The marriage cert will show James' s father and whether he was married before.

Joanne Report 3 Oct 2013 09:50

Hi
there are a few discrepancies with years of birth on the census and the birth certs. I have but the names all seem to match. Is that usual?

For instance in the 1891 census it says William McConnell is born 1886 but the DOB on cert. is 1885?

On the Irish side I have registered with rootsireland.ie Does anyone know this site before I pay money?

thanks

Birth years on census's are approximate and can often be a couple of years out, In fact abt 50% could be out by 1 year due to when their actual birth date is and the date the census was taken because the question asked was not when were you born, But the question was how old are you,

Joanne Report 3 Oct 2013 11:03

Thank you Roy that makes sense.

I have a new query I have found a Samuel Richardson born 1783 Married to Martha Crowhurst.

I have my family tree up to their daughter Lois born 1814

Ancestry co.uk are showing two Samuel Richardsons born that date, both born in Mayfield, but one is in Kentucky and one is Mayfield Sussex. Can anyone suggest what I look at to find which one is correct?

I really appreciate all the help

KathleenBell Report 3 Oct 2013 14:39

Sorry, I can't help with your query but just wanted to ask if this is the Lois you mentioned (in the 1851 census):-

1851 census transcription details for: Olives, Heathfield

National Archive Reference:
RG number: HO107
Piece: 1638
Folio: 394
Page: 9
Reg. District: Hailsham
Sub District: Hellingly
Parish: Heathfield
Enum. District: 5A
Ecclesiastical District:
City/Municipal Borough:

Address: Olives, Heathfield
County: Sussex

Name Relation Condition Sex Age Birth Year Occupation , Disability Where Born

RICHARDSON, James Head Married M 40 1811 Farmer
Mayfield, Sussex
RICHARDSON, Lois Wife Married F 37 1814
Sandhurst, Kent
RICHARDSON, John Son Unmarried M 16 1835
Mayfield, Sussex
RICHARDSON, Caroline Daughter Unmarried F 14 1837
Pembury, Kent
RICHARDSON, Charlotte Daughter F 11 1840
Mayfield, Sussex
RICHARDSON, James Son M 5 1846 8.1
Mayfield, Sussex
RICHARDSON, Lois Daughter F 3 1848
Heathfield, Sussex
RICHARDSON, Isaac Son M 1 1850
Heathfield, Sussex
PORTER, Henry Servant Unmarried M 23 1828 Farm Labourer
Heathfield, Sussex

It's just that if this is the correct Lois then Richardson is her married name, not her maiden name (unless she married someone with the same surname, like a cousin etc.)

I cannot find out where I got that, I found it yesterday. I will look back and see what I did?

How confusing all these people with the same names!

Joanne - if the Ancestry information that you refer to for Samuel Richardson born 1783 comes from member's trees on Ancestry - BEWARE!!

Never ever trust any information on anyone else's tree unless it is well documented, has copies of source documents, etc. Too many people accept the hints offered by Ancestry and they are very unreliable, factor in that people copy duff info from tree to tree. There ARE some good ones but take nothing at face value without doing your own research to verify.

I need to start a tree again for each Grand parent I think and check as you say
