MC - I had 2 aunts moved near the church, one to Goathland Ave just to E, and the other to Northumberland Ave, just to W. No marrs there, though - I had 5 aunts wed more into town - Byker/Heaton. I think one wed at St Silas Byker, abt 5km away, where my gran also wed.

The wine offer is one which can be had virtually anywhere..............it's just GR getting more advertising revenue.

I would think the 'new' records are all going to have to be paid for................and are already available on FMP, which is after all owned by the same group as GR

The majority of them can probably also be found on the FREE familysearch site

You used to be able to search by census ref on GR, but this seems to be gone now, so using FMP's

This is better, but I still have to click on every name to get their marital status and occup, then C & P that in.

Ancestry allows one to see the whole h/h, but initially just the names & ages.
I can "View others on page" and see the h/h's pob & relationship, and hover over the "View Record" link to see marital status & occupation - I usually just type this in myself, but if it's a long occup, I'll click on him and C & P that. Still a fair bit of editting.

None of them are ideal - best is FreeCEN - but they've only got most of Cornwall and Caithness done in 1881.

I think it's pretty hit or miss if the GR record's in FS's main series "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975"

I searched up in "Northumberland and Durham Baptisms" for Elizabeth Thirlaway. Got 9 hits (incl 1 for Betty). FS gets just one of those hits (transcribed thrice) - there were no images here, just transcriptions.
The hit I got was for 24/2/1833 at St. Bartholomew Longbenton (FS doesn't name the church on any transcription). I know thee are (unindexed) Durham BT images on FS for Longbenton, but they only run 1762-1830 online.

Have things changed? I thought the 1881 census was free to view.

I found that I had 50 free credits, I've used 10 just on the offchance it was something I didn't have, it wasn't. A baptism on the Thames & medway costs 10 credits.

I was also fairly appalled yesterday that whilst a transcription of the 1881 is free, it costs 5 credits if you want to view other household members and that births ( 1884 was the one I looked at so on Freebmd) do not show the cert numbers. Not very helpful to new members who do not realise they need the cert numbers to order. IMO.

We all know what Genes Extra is ................... a perk for UK-only subscribers, showing discrimination against all overseas subscribers.


I don't think anyone on this thread has mentioned Genes Extra in connection with the new Baptism or other collection

We are wondering if the bmd collections are extras that have to be paid for or whether they are included in the Platinum subscription.


The general consensus appears to be that a number of the new records are in fact "extras" in the sense that they are not included in the current cost of a Platinum subscription, and therefore credits have to be bought by all members in order to be able to see them.

Then it looks to me that no one seems to know the answer, as finding out the prices of anything on this site is no different than it was before

There are also Baptisms freely available on many OPC sites, so it's well worth checking before buying any credits.


For example, I see that you have listed the Medway area which interests me greatly.

However, I have been using the Medway City Ark site for years and have taken part of my family back to the 1600's thanks to them. I find it utterly fascinating to see actual copies of the various registers.

It is also free to use.
