Roy,
A very good analogy. By the way did you ever manage to sell your car? ;-)
Penny,
An interesting idea but I have my doubts about it being Estelle complete with false beard and sunglasses. It might of course be Phil in drag. ;-)

NS "I never see anybody promoting GR records"
Has it never occurred to you that members do promote/recommend GR whilst on other sites
"Join me in promoting GR's 1911 census records" WHY we no they are here because its in the list of records available to GR members,
If you really want to promote GR can I suggest GR is not the right place, WE are already here so don't need too, the best place to promote any web site is on other web sites
I once tried to sell my car, I had loads or cards and posters to advertise it but got no enquiries, Then the penny dropped, my cards and posters where stuck all over MY kitchen wall so only me and my family got to see them.
get my drift

Jonesey .................
a very good, well reasoned response, that a lot of us agree with.
As always, of course!
May I point out that I have several times, at least 4 and possibly 6, posted to NS that most of us long time members joined GR before they carried any records, when they were in fact a place to build a tree for free.
Soon after that, they added a Chat Board where members could pass on information.
Then a year or so later they added the more formalised Boards where members could ask for help and information from other members. I believe that is when the first subscription was instituted .............. you could still build your tree for free, but you had to pay something like £5 a year to participate in the Boards.
Those Boards, albeit in a somewhat different format that the ones in existence today, were well established by the time I joined in April 2004, for £5 a year.
The records did not begin to be available on GR until late 2007 ..........
........ so we had to find our information elsewhere by taking out subs in sites that did carry records, we now have no need to buy Gold or Platinum on here because GR do not yet have the records that we now require ................. mainly from obscure little local or restrictive sites
The 1911 census, for example, was first available on the official 1911 census site, a pay as you go site. I joined that as soon as it became available. FMP followed about 6 months later.
In a similar way, the 1901 census became available shortly before I joined GR, and I joined the official 1901 census site as soon as I could.
As I said, I have explained most of this several times on previous NS threads ................ so she had no reason to act shocked when responding to posts on page one, as in "what do we do if we don't use GR records".
Unless of course, NS believes that I am lying about it all?
I may not have the absolute time sequences correct, especially for the period from 2002 - 2004.......... but that is because I'm saying only what I have gathered from others, and from reading the history of GR.
I have a small tree on here, I have a slightly larger tree elsewhere. I have a Standard membership on here, and a membership on 2 other sites, as well as a great knowledge of known and somewhat esoteric free sites that have helped me find information, and which I use to help others.
How many know of the Blacksmiths Site, or Castle Gardens, the Westmorland site, or similar sites????
I found those when searching for my own ancestors, and now consult them to help others.
NS should remember that many of us do not live in the UK, cannot visit record offices, etc etc etc ....................... we have to rely on the internet, and whatever sites we can find that best serve our needs at the time.

"Perhaps it might help the debate if all those members who don't subscribe to GR's Records, nor ever have done so, refrain from offering advice that they know absolutely nothing about"
Gosh IGP if that was extended to it's logical conclusion, ie not offering advice on things you know nothing about...it would be ever so quiet on these boards :-D

it's becoming an obsession with me just to look and see where the current row has moved on to when I get back from work in the evenings !!

NanaSue, you have made no response to my earlier post of 11.23 but I have edited the DOB on it as had put the wrong year.
What would be nice, as I said in that earlier post, is if you HELPED on the boards as a way of promoting the site and proving how good the records are, instead of banging on about what others should do. If you blind everyone with your skill at finding info in the GR records then newbies will be more likely to use the records here won't they?
In common with many people I cannot afford a full sub here, but when I first joined I bought credits ( I don't know if you know this but the info found using credits is only viewable for a certain time...when one is new this info may have gone before one has the knowledge of what to do with it!).
It was the help of other members that kept me here initially, I very rarely need the currently available records now...but use such as I can access ( some free Irish sites for eg, records not on this site) to help others here. In that way I think it IS promoting this site as a good place to be.
:-)

I dont understand your abseemingly obsession with Genes.
You may have taken out subs that allows you access to records we didn,t have access too in days yonks before Genes had them,
We had to go elsewhere AND spend money to join other sites to find our families,
Doesnt take away anything from any site.
I must say I do object to seemingly told I can only use Genes for any searches
Surely we can use any site even tho we may pay subs .
I like to search and find what family records are out there

To be honest even tho GR is GREAT site I joined it yonks ago before they had records and I had to join other sites for family info.
I WONT be derogative of any subs site every one has there own advantages and disadvantages .I go where I can find the info I need.
I have found burial records birth records census records on many sites and as long as they are there I will use them.
Some sites have the records that Genes dont ,that doesnt mean I am a disloyal genes member :-(

NanaSue - why don't you check what you've written before posting and stop the need to edit almost immediately?
And who mentioned the big red books?
