We each now have an ID number ie...Nat Ins, When did this come about, as I am trying to establish when and why my granddad changed his name from his birth name to the maiden name of his mother.
In 1894 he was Roberts, but on his marriage in 1898, he used the name Maudesley.

Presumably between 1894 & 1898!
One can use what ever name one wants as long as it is not for illegal reasons. It's unlikely that you'll ever find out exactly why.
- Fell out with his father? - He'd become an heir of a relative from the Maudesley side if he took their name? - Sounds 'better'? - His parents had never married, or he was born before they were? - He was hoping to avoid legal/criminal charges? - He was entering into a bigamist marriage?
Added - our current NHS number probably came into being along with the NHS c 1948

Not strictly an answer to your question but!
Anyone can call themselves by any name they choose providing that they do not change their original name for fraudulent purposes. There is no legal requirement to notify anyone or any authority of your name change.

Just to answer the question when was NI first introduced
The National Insurance Act 1911
Edit to Add info The system didn't have an ID number, until the NHS was included, The employer had to buy stamps and stick them on a "card" as proof, then when you left that employer he gave you your cards, Remember when you lost your job people said they where "given there cards"
The saying is still used today

??? This is the only marriage in 1898 with surname spelt MAUDESLEY, although it appears to have been registered under MaWdesley too. Is this your Grandad?
Registration event: Marriage
Name: MAUDESLEY, Harry Registration district: Wolstanton County: Staffordshire Year of registration: 1898 Quarter of registration: Apr-May-Jun Spouse's last name: Not available before 1912 Volume no: 6B Page no: 249 MarriageFinder: Harry Maudesley married one of the following people:
BRISTOL, Annie Rosa <<<<<<<< WALLBANKS, Sarah Jane BLOOR, William Thomas MAWDESLEY, Harry
IF this is him, it would appear he can be tracked through census as Maudesley/Mawdesley - in 1911 he has spelt the name with the W

Hello all,
Sorry for the delay in getting back but I had a hospital appointment.
He was born John Roberts the son of John Roberts and Mary, nee Mawdsley, but we now spell it Maudesley.
I have his army registration papers when he joined the Arghyll & Sutherland Highlanders on 5th August 1891, as John Roberts, he then bought himself out on 11th October 1893 for the princley sum of £18. I do have a photo of him in full highland dress uniform.
I tracked him down using the name of his stepfather, George Massie, a baker in Bootle, Lancashire. In fact granddad worked in the bakery and that was his profession on his army recruitment papers.
He had a sister Mary Ellen and a brother William. I have made contact with the granddaughter of Mary Ellen, but sadly she cannot add any ideas as to why he changed his name. The one census I am unable to find the family is in 1871, Mary Ellen would have been about 2 years of age, Granddad was born in December 1873, and William two years later. They were living in Bootle at that time.
I thank you all for your help and interest in my problem.

Kathlyn, It mean you have another thread about this man, the link is for your other thread, It would have saved members time who were helping if you had just bumpt that thread up asking for more help,
It's also against GR guidelines to have multiple threads on the same family for that very same reason
Edit, On saying that your OP question was not specifically looking for Him more a general enquiry which is probably why JannieAnnie said Connected? and not duplicate?

Thanks for that info Roy. Sadly because of a car accident, my memory is not too good and finding things is a problem. I had hoped that members on GR could be a little more tollerant. Besides, using a thread that was "old" would possibly not gain interest from GR members.
If I "rock the boat" I am sorry, but I am unable to change because of the above.

Kathlyn, Members are tolerant, Sorry I had clicked the submit button before I had finished my post so I have added to it, which may explain in full
Bumping your old thread up is fine in fact it helps and saves members having to start from scratch plus covering old ground "info already found"
just edit the thread title to include help still required

Hi Kay - over on the left hand side of these pages, under Tools, is a link "My Threads" clicking on that takes you back to every thread you've ever started or posted on. When you find the relevant thread then, as Roy says, it moves to the front of the boards where everyone can see it.
If you go to your very first post on a thread and click "edit" you can then amend the heading if you wish to reflect that this is an update or request for further info.

Hello Kay
Sorry, perhaps I should have said more than just 'connected?' when I posted but am popping on and off of the site today.
I found your thread interesting and was following it - because name changes occur in my family research and I recalled a bakery incident somewhere. It turned out to be your thread and I added the link, as Roy explained, with the intention of quickly accessing connected information, sorry if my action seemed intolerant, it was not my intention.
