Hi,
Thank you all for the replies.
I will certainly be purchasing some certificates to back my searches up!
I am very confident that i am following the right family as my father has been able to provide me with alot of good information regarding my great grand parents and great great grand parents. I have found my great grandad Albert Hopkinson living at home with my great great grand parents James and Betsy Hopkinson in the 1901 census, along with all of my dads great uncles and aunties who he can also remember. The address is correct and the occupations of both Albert (Hair-dresser) and James (Boot and shoe maker/repairer) are also correct. They were living in the Carrington area of nottingham, and then after that in market place Nottingham. I am 100% sure that these are my ancestors. Previous to this, I have managed to locate James Hopkinson's birth record in 1852. However, it is at this point that i can no longer verify that it is correct. James's parents were called William and Ann Hopkinson and although i have located them all living together in the 1861 census in the correct area, i cannot say 100% that this is them. There are no other James Hopkinsons showing up in searches with the correct birth year and area and although it would be easy to just say ''yes its them for sure'' i obviosuly dont want to do this because i want an accurate tree.
I have also found a few other trees with the same James and Betsy Hopkinson, and also Albert in them, and i have asked the tree owners to let me have a look, but i have had no replies yet. I would not be using their trees to copy from, just merely to see if somebody else has pieced together the info in a similar way to me.
How would i go about finding out more, correct information about James Hopkinson's parents? as both William and Ann were born circa 1815/16 and by the time of the 1841 census, they both would have been married and living together with children who i dont know anything about. This leaves me unsure of Ann's maiden name and origins, and also williams. All i know from my father is that William was born in Blidworth Nottingham - he knows this from what he was told about as a child in the 50's.

Welcome to the boards Ian,
First You say your new to this? plus it looks like your membership only started this month,
even thought their is census info and BMD index and other resources on the Internet to research your family you would require to have other documentary evidence to confirm that what you have found is correct such as BMD certs, you don't appear to have had enough time to get that far back with evidence to confirm your following the correct lines
If you want your tree to be "accurate" then i would suggest you slow down and buy at least one cert per generation It is very easy to think your on the right track only to find out in 6 months or even two yours later that you made a mistake and have been following the wrong family

The people who help on here don't use GR for research, so it's hard to advise on how to use their 'records'...which, incidentally, are not GR's. Everything they offer you to look through is taken from other sites.
Which part of the country are you looking at?
Are you aware of the many OPC's? (Online Parish Clerks)
And parish registers on Ancestry?

Welcome to the boards Ian. I suppose the first question is - have you actually got the family 1841? Sometimes this in itself is a little tricky! Then you need to work slowly backwards. The birth cert of a child born after 1837, if available, might be your starting point. It's a bit difficult to advise without knowing where you are exactly. Have you tried looking for other family members on here? use 'search all trees', found in search trees above. Jan

Hi all
Im new to this so please bear with me.
I have found an extensive amount of family info out in just a few days, but now im back to the pre 1837 birth records and 1841 census and im struggling to find records. Is there any way to get this kind of info when the genesreunited search function (including parish records) does not find anything before these years? I have used familysearch.org and this seems to be able to find info from 1600 onwards, but the information is very limited and so for example, i think i may have found my great great great grandfather, but cannot confirm this due to results only giving me his name, and no children, spouse etc
Thanks
