Just recieved an E mail from Brightsolid asking me fto complete a survey about FMP.
I only have membership of the very cheap version which appeared last year, but I have completed it.
I wonder if I was on the right track yesterday & Brightsolid are considering merging the two sites?

LadyScozz Report 4 Jan 2013 16:12

I saw an ad for FMP, thought I'd try it out.

No idea what records they have, but the blurb gave the impression they had ALL UK records.

Looked for in Scotland~

Myself ~ no record of this person
Parents ~ ditto
both sets of grandparents ~ ditto (all 4 born before 1900)

No surnames are unusual, one of them is SMITH!

Definitely not worth my time or money. :-(

I took out that cheap sub to fmp US version last year.

Not worth it at all!

Have been wondering about taking out a sub to the UK version ....... I've been very happy with what I find on ancestry, but another arrow in my bow ...............!!!

I doubt that you will find ANY good Scottish records on any site ..................... the Scottish government still governs what is released to which sites.

The only site they give everything to is Scotland's People ................ and I doubt that the fact that that is in BS's stable will mean that the records will be shared with fmp and GR (if it survives). At least not for many a year.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Jan 2013 17:23

I first said soon after the BS takeover was approved that GR would be merged into fmp.

I've posted it on threads several times, and said it to GR staff ................. at least one has said "I hope not"

sounds ominous, no???

I do think that it is the aim ...........

....... which means that BS dissembled to the Competitions Board which required that GR be maintained as a separate entity from fmp

I have the full FMP and the cheap US version...tried the US one on the first day in august and have not touched it since.

Although I like FMP I may not bother to renew , now that ancestry have added more things( 1911, outgoing passenger lists), there does not seem much point in having both anymore

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Jan 2013 00:41

I've just looked at those new passenger lists.

My great-aunt and her husband left the UK in November 1902 to live in the US

Yes, they are on the ancestry list ..................... but I got much more information from the Ellis Island site .......

........ and that site is free!

VIVinHERTS

VIVinHERTS Report 6 Jan 2013 13:55

I much prefer Anc*stry to FMP. I haven't used Scotland's People and understand it is quite expensive to use.

Sylvia, the Ellis Island site is great!

With the amount of mistranscribed entries there are, I find having Ancestry and FMP is the answer. If not on one, can usually find it on the other one.
Then by taking another name on the page I find it on the other site, find out how they have mistranscribed my one, then put in a correction.

Referring back to my original comment (on page 1), I have just received my reminder from Genes and will be charged £7.96 for 6 months.

As this is a 20% reduction, I am not complaining, but it does look as though the only people being penalised are the very long-standing members. These, by definition, are also the most experienced!!

There is a thread on the General Chat board (page 1) entitled,

'renewal fees-3rd UPDATE-page 6.' by chris of wessex.

I'm very, very confused at GR's reply about who is chosen :-S

Viv, from the reply quoted, I am reminded of the method that my parents and I used when we did the football pools - we picked numbers out of a cup (without looking) ;-)

My husband's comment when I followed Viv's advice (above):

That can't be right! Are you sure you've read it properly??!!!

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 23 Jan 2013 12:38

Yes, I know that Scotland's People has the records. I've spent a small fortune over the years, enough to pay for a long holiday to Scotland!

But the advertisement for fmp was misleading!! As are most ads for genealogy sites.

There's usually some blurb about "British" records.......but when anyone tries to find people outside of England ........... :-P

What's this about not being able to remove trees? Do you mean when my subs expire I cannot remove my tree for the site? Thanks for the warning!

Kense

Kense Report 23 Jan 2013 16:24

Where does it say you can't remove trees if your subscription lapses?

Surely as a free member you can still work on your tree.

Mark

Mark Report 23 Jan 2013 16:38

If you lapse, you will lose full members access.

Genes have a cheek to charge anything at present.

I just can't access my tree or anybody else's.

Am I correct to presume that everybody else can get access?
