It is a lovely building...I have very happy childhood memories. The garden used to be full of snowdrops in Winter.
Thank you Julie..and thank you Jill for alerting me.

It's a lovely building. I looked at it via Google Earth. I 'stood' on the main road that runs along the side of it. That brickwork is old and amazing as is the 'out building' attached to it.

Here you go Susan - a photograph. It appears that you can contact the photographer by clicking on his name. If he knows it's one of the oldest houses I presume he knows something of it's history.

Hi Susan

This family are living at The Chestnuts in 1911.

Elizabeth Hall 62
John Harold Heywood 31
Lilian May Hall 20

Presume Elizabeth was married before as both the above are her children.

The record is from Ancestry and there are 2 images relating to it. The 2nd image is the household Schedule and the address is:

The Chestnuts
Hutt Green
Whitely Bridge
Yorkshire

Took a while to locate because there is a mis spelling of Hut.

In 1901 the same family are there and The Chestnuts is shown as being along Selby Road.

In 1891 they are in the same village but no house name or road is given.

Hi Susan,
Depends on your Planning Office, you may be able search their records back to 1948 or even further back. The land Registry only goes back to 1925 when the new act came in. There are Poor rates Taxes that go from c1934 - 1948 [this will depend on the area you looking at] prior to this 1910/1911 Poor rates act. The Census's back from 1911 -1841. Land tax documents between these periods. 1840 Tithe register and before that land Tax again, 1811 -1808 Kings Tax more land tax back to Window Tax c1750 and then the Hearth tax 1660 - [ although you may have only names of people paying with no connection to house name or number].
Best of luck

Hi Susan,

Have you tried to find it on Google Earth? If you can remember the road it was on or the rough location, you can go down to street view and maybe find if it still there.

It might now just be a numbered house or have a different name. Then I'd suggest writing to the present owner and also see if there is a history society which would cover the area.

I have travelled to so many places when I find addresses on the census'..

Hope you find. Jill

The Land Registry only has records for houses which have changed hands since its inception

Susan............

You haven't answered my questions relating to the property

Have you considered purchasing credits on FMP?

.............IF.......the house was built before 1911, and was ALWAYS identified by the name under which you knew it

Robert Report 9 Oct 2012 15:19

the land registry hold all the detail on land and property, but it will cost you to get the information you require

Hello Reggie
I would gladly visit the libraries but now live in the very north of Scotland. The house was my Grandfathers and I have close emotional ties to it. I would like to find out something about it.

ErikaH Report 9 Oct 2012 14:38

Do you know when it was built?

Has it always had the same name?

What is your connection to the property?

You could visit the main library for the relevant area, and look at ER's............

Censuses are searchable by address on FMP

Susan

Susan Report 9 Oct 2012 13:58
