Thank you all!!

Dianne - I think the upshot is that if you see "ter" (or any other odd letters that look like part of the word before) anywhere on FamilySearch census transcriptions - just ignore them!

Kense

Kense Report 23 Aug 2012 07:27

It is not on the original image.

It says Bromsgrove, Worcester but has been written with the t in Worcester looking like a captal T.

I think the transcriber has taken this as Worcs Ter (as MarieCeleste said above).

Here's an example. Hope this helps

John Harbach
Event: Census
Event Date: 1911
Gender: Male
Age: 45
Birthplace: Bromsgrove Ter, Worcestershire
Record Type: Household
Registration District: Ashton Under Lyne
Sub-district: Denton
Parish: Denton
County: Lancashire

I've come across it several times. Hope this helps.

For Anc..y records there is usually a "printer friendly" selection in the Page Tools on the left.

I used to have IE8 and never had that problem but since getting new laptop with IE9 have had to click the icon thingy on every site I C&P from

Kense

Kense Report 22 Aug 2012 17:11

It does on IE9, not sure about IE8.

If pasting into a word document the usual method (Select, CTRL C, CTRL V) works well, as it tabulates it.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 22 Aug 2012 17:06

Kense - that's the easiest way to c&p but does it also counteract the white spaces IE8 causes? I've never used that.

EDIT: Ooh, so it does!

An easier solution is to just click on COPY on the Family Search Page which is at the top right between MY SOURCE BOX and PRINT. Then simply use paste (CTRL V) in the GR submit box.

Penny, are you using IE8? If so, putting it into compatibility mode will stop the white spaces when doing a c&p.

Next to the URL line is a little icon that looks like a torn piece of paper, if you click on that it turns blue - repeat for each tab that you have open.

Dianne - it must be something flukey with FamilySearch's fields and is perhaps picking up the last three characters of Worcester as the first three of the next field, here's the proper transcription from FMP which FamilySearch links to:

a made up example isn't really very helpful ( sorry\!)
can we see the actual exampl;e to read for ourselves and try and interpret what it says?

Dianne

Dianne Report 22 Aug 2012 16:07

Yes, I thought about the word being short for terrace, but here below is a made up example from 'family search.org' where I've seen it many times.

Alfred Harbidge

England and Wales Census, 1881

birth: 1867 Ter Bromsgrove,? Worcestershire,? England
census: 1911 Alfred Harbidge

Thanks again.

Is it part of the previous bit of the address? Ter is quite often put as abbreviation for terrace.

Could you give an example of where you have found it, please?
Many Thanks

Dianne Report 22 Aug 2012 07:07

Could someone please tell me what it means when 'ter' is placed before the name of a town e.g.'Ter Bromsgrove'. Does it perhaps mean 'near'? I find it quite often when I am researching my family tree.

Thanks a bunch,

Dianne
