How ridiculous for someone to RR such a post! And even more ridiculous for Genes to agree with the RR!

Personally I find it very helpful, if I'm having a problem with another site, to know that others are having the same problem and it's not a problem with my computer or my subscription.

Was the thread in question the one where I suggested you didn't leave it over night? A similar thing happened to me, so there are now a number of us smarting from a 'slap on the wrist'. :-|

And no, I didn't report it!

It does make me so angry/irritated that someone can be so petty minded. If they were over-zealous GR employees, it might be a different matter. But they probably aren't as GR can add to a thread if that was the case.

"I am afraid we cannot have postings discussing the functionality of another website on our boards."

- that is untrue because Estelle of GR categorically stated that members could post about other sites provided that we did not say they were better than genes reunited; so that member of staff that wrote to GB should read this.

If it was a joke then it was a very poor one.

Wake up Jonesey........I think it was a joke ;-)

The info (posted by the members) from ‘other sites’ actually make ‘this’ site what it is – there’s an irony in there somewhere

;-)

And why in g@#s name a member of GR would feel the need to RR a post because it makes mention of a competitor, beggars belief :-S

We live in a reputedly free society......

The petty-minded GR people can't 'gag' us...............and if they weren't so aware of their own shortcomings, they wouldn't try to.

One would have thought that GR would be delighted to see posts about problems with other sites...........

Have you wondered whether it would have been rr'd, if someone else posted it, or was it the fact that someone said watch out for the board police that caught the attention of the self appointed modorator?

DazedConfused Report 20 Aug 2012 14:55

Wot a load of old tosh

Many of us on here are members of more than one site and it having a problem with on of them it is only logical to pop back on here to find out if anyone else is having the same problems.

For crying out loud how can that infringe their T& C's?

Do not get it :-S

The only true value in GR is its paying members - the ones who help others, that is

I think the thinking behind being able to post on here:

"" It is fine to mention other sites with regards to look-ups, especially if you have found something on there that could help someone. "

Is that the help you are thus giving someone will lead them to stay here, rather than then go to that other site, because of the helpful nature and experience of the site members ;-) ( which has always been the major selling point imo)

Yes Reggie had spotted that one.

So can we post if any problems with F**dM*P***

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 20 Aug 2012 12:52

Unfortunately the 'derogatory comments' are mostly justified...........and are, as far as I'm aware, factual.

What's the old saying about 'truth hurting'?

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 20 Aug 2012 12:49

Not sure what is the difference between posting where you find the info or if the site has problems.

Did reply to GR asking to clarify where in the message board guidelines and T & C this is covered.

So far the response was it has been mentioned in their original email so have asked a second time.

Thanks Rose.

Hi GlitterBaby

I queried the position re mentioning other sites with Estelle a little while back, and asked her if she could clarify GR's position.

" It is fine to mention other sites with regards to look-ups, especially if you have found something on there that could help someone.
What we don't accept is the following:

1). People asking questions about Ancestry (or other sites) - how much it costs, and that type of question.
2). Derogatory comments about our site in comparison to other family history sites "

Got this from GR this morning:

Dear Maureen

You recently added a message board response using your Genes Reunited membership.

It has been brought to our attention that the nature of this posting breaches the Message Board guidelines and terms and conditions of our website and the item has now been removed from Genes Reunited.

Continuing to create content of this nature may result in your eventual removal from the site.

I am afraid we cannot have postings discussing the functionality of another website on our boards.

We thank you in anticipation of your co-operation and adherence to the terms of your Genes Reunited membership.

Flaming heck all I did was ask a couple of days ago about whether any members were having problems with a well known site that has census records. At the time a member did post a reply saying to me that it would probably get picked up by the "board police"

Not a happy bunny,

Maureen
