I've been wondering. Would it be fair to post a message asking the person to moderate their attitude please or we will RR them for the reasons we all agree on?
We already know of course that some recent posters will not recognise what we say and it will be like light the blue touchpaper and stand back but if we give them a chance, at least we will be seen as trying to be fair, especially with the newer ones. :-|

After being on the receiving end of the abuse last week I will certainly be adopting a less tolerant approach to workie tickets.

If I get abuse again I will most certainly report the post and, most importantly, I will post on the thread saying what I have done and why (as did Irene last week).

I think it's very important to make public that you've reported so other researchers know what's going on.

A week or so ago I pm'd someone new-ish who was asking for help in a certain area. I offered her assistance directly because I reckoned if I had offered to go the extra mile on here, I might have opened the floodgates.

I received a lovely thank you reply back and I hope I am going to be able to help her.

I always think carefully with any reply on here now. I tend to judge whether I do or not by the way the person writes their request or query.

I live not far from a house once owned by the Bird family of Bird's Custard fame. On the spur of the moment I decided to see if anyone had the family in their tree. I sent a pm to someone who did on the off-chance that they knew nothing about the house itself. I gave them other info and the pm which did take me a few minutes to write was opened but not even an acknowledgement. His loss.

Shirley. I totally get your frustration. I wonder if some of those who expect so much think that our computer access is different to theirs. Perhaps we are so efficient they think we just input a name and dob and everything they ever wanted to know pops up instantly. If only!

I know that we are really talking about a small number here but we need to get a grip on manners and behaviour before we get another thread like last weekend.

I would like to suggest that if we get even one argumentative or abusive posting we pm it and simply put the reason in the next reply that GR members who are here to help will no longer tolerate abusive responses. If those of us who are here more all start doing this, maybe GR themselves will begin to recognise that we have had enough.

I just choose where I help. If I feel that a poster has an attitude I will just walk away and not post anymore. Even if we were paid workers we should not have to put up with some of rubbish that gets thrown at us.

I TRY to be very with it and not be impatient with any replies but I have fallen foul of posters who have done duplicate posts and not acknowledge any info posted on an earlier posting.
I remember my exasperated reply on one duplicate posting of "oh for goodness sake" that got meet with loads of abuse and an accusation from the poster of being extremely rude, and others who read it asking Heh Shirley??? explain yourself. I hadn't been online at the exact time and then another poster explained. By the time people went to look at the earlier posting when me and one other had posted LOADS that was being asked for again!!! it had been deleted to cover themselves!!

Makes you want to give up helping sometimes ALTHOUGH I still do it! :-D

I do not mean the one from the weekend just gone. Presume that is the one that had posted the same request on many genealogy sites and of course got the same info time after time. Turned nasty and kept mentioning a medical problem he had. Loads of members on this site have far worse problems than he claimed to have.

The one I might add to my black list claimed to have a very good job, type of job where you have to study for years and pass numerous exams. BUT he could not grasp the basic info given to him.

this is another person .... who is posting under another name, that name also shows up when you click on his name BUT the photo is of him, and he signs it with a shortened version of his name

Erin. I kept notes. I was so upset and disgusted. I'm glad that I did because the person has now taken the info given to them and deleted their abusive threads.

Jax. Do GB and Patchem mean the same person from the weekend just gone? I didn't know of the name change

I have always said I keep a black list of members names and numbers
