thanks for the tip, unfortunately they often give you tidbits of information, you sign up and then you find out that you already knew, turns out now anyway Uncle Henry died of complications in 1930's after an operation

My grandad died in WW1 and my son found even the details of how he died on Ancestry.com

just as an update, turns out Henry didn't die in ww1 returned home and died in the 1030's after an operation, but roots chat did help as someone recognised the badge on his cap

Rootschat is a wonderful site. It is a large community with lots of boards contained for more specialised or themed subjects.

IE WW1 & 2 Census resources Graveyards etc.

There must be about 50 or more sub boards and there are also the County boards.

I would heartily recommend Rootschat to everyone.

I had some photos of a WW2 german lufftwaffe pilot that I found in my fathers 'stuff', not official but look like those taken by another soldier. Had no idea who or what they were. Posted a couple of the photos on Rootschat, I now know the name of airman and the date of the photos and the type of plane. All of which I find amazing.

this might also help me with my maternal line, my great grandfather had a 2nd family & I'm trying to trace them, fingers crossed

There you can download a copy of this photo and someone may be able to id his regiment.

Rootschat is a very good site. And they have a lot of members who are interested in specific subjects. So you can load your photo in the beginners section and then it will be moved (with a connecting thread) to WW1.

I have found some very knowledgeable people on there when it comes to WW1 & 2. And there is a lady on there Valda who is very hot on London burials.

Do youself a favour and join. It is like these chat boards here on Genes, but no trees, just lots of people looking for and getting lots of assistance.

thanks for you reply, sorry I havent been back to you sooner, hope you are able to help I don't know about the nickname as I knew nothing about him until I found his photo in my aunt's belongings recently.

Throughout the census etc did Henry ever use a middle name or 'nick' name?
I am having troubles finding a Henry OSBORNE born Derby in the UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919.

Some soldiers would enlist using different names (nicknames etc) or just initials...

There are a few Henry's on the list that don't mention a birth place, just their residence/area when the enlisted but I have no idea where they would be in comparison.

I have been going through 2 different lists for War Dead and comparing records and so far have one odd man out..He appears on one list and not the other,,so am going to see if I can find him elsewhere..

This looks like a possible marriage: quarter ended December 1910 Basford - Henry Osborne and Frances W Robinson (also down as Sampson Robinson). There is a Frances Winifred Robinson born quarter ended March 1893 Basford.

thanks everybody for your replies, the marriage relates to the 1911 census records where he is married to winnie, (dont know her maiden name)
in regards to finding his service record if I could find something like yours potty it would help because I know his siblings and parents I seem to know a lot about him except for what I want to k now

I have found the service record for my uncle who was killed in WW1, so there are some online. It contained a list of all his living brothers and sisters on a form filled out by his mother.

You say you have his marriage in 1910, but I can't see a marriage in 1910 for a Henry Osborne in Derbyshire (or did he marry elsewhere?).

There is a William Osborne married in the Chesterfield registration district which covers Whittington (if he married in the same place as he was born.

Do you know his wife's name?

ancestry.co.uk carries the WW1 records.


Unfortunately only about 30% of the records for the men survived WW2.


You may be able to find his listing under men killed in WW1 ..................... I have not ever found a service record for a deceased soldier, although others say they have.

have been to their site, unfortunately I cannot exactly say which one is him, there are 2 who fit the profile thanks anyway some of them do not have partner details

If you search CWGC you should able to narrow it down by age then parent/wifes name.

can anyone help me, I have a photo of my great uncle Henry Osborne, on the back my aunt has written "killed in WW1". I have found him in the census records so know where he was born- Whittington, Derbyshire and his marriage in 1910. I cannot find any website where I can look him up because I need the link to where he came from or was living- East Kirkby, there are a lot of Henry's in the military records.
