Well done Sylvia for explaining that so clearly and correctly. I think the initial change in 2007 was when the original owners sold GR and the new owners put up the fees.

I agree with that :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

cookie ........................

you can't change from 6 months to 12 months and get the grandfathered rate

There is an option for 12 monthly membership at Standard level for about double the 6 monthly rate, and you should be able to opt for that at renewal time.

To try to make it clear ..............

Before 2007 there were only 2 classes of membership ......... Free or 12 month Standard subscription.

That changed around mid-2007 ................... the Standard sub was changed to 6 monthly for the same cost as the previous 12 monthly, and Gold, and then later Platinum, memberships were added as more and more records became available.

They could not in all honesty double the subscription for current Standard members ................... so that is why all Standard members from before 2007 were grandfathered. It is now considered as a loyalty bonus.

If, however, such a 12 month Standard member upgrades to Gold or Platinum and then wants to drop back to being a Standard member ................ they lose the privilege, and have to be on the 6 monthly rate.

I see that you have been a member since 2006 .................. if you began as a Free member and upgraded to Standard after about mid-2007, then only the "new" Standard sub was available. Or if you had an early Standard membership, but decided to upgrade to Gold or Platinum then downgraded again to Standard, then you lost the privilege.

I remember that happening to you Sylvs..

Cookie, I joined in 2004 and have always paid for 12 months. It was set up as continual and has always been the same amount.

Hmmm should I say I live in the UK? I think they know me too well to try that...

I am not sure why it has never changed re rate of exchange on my credit card but it hasn't ;-)

How long exactly do have to be a paying member tp get it for 12months instead of 6

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 14 Feb 2012 06:31

Lorraine

it is a grandfathered clause, for long time members, ie, those who joined before 2007.

Persie .........

I discovered last year when they asked me to pay in US$ instead of £ sterling, that the amount charged was higher than the UK amount ....... and it became even higher for me because the credit card company then had to translate it into Can$.

It would have meant me paying almost double the £sterling amount originally quoted in the email telling me my sub was due!

The problem is that GR determines the other currency amounts only at certain times of the year ...... I'm not sure if they do it only once a year or monthly.

However, a credit card company charges the rate at the moment that the charge is debited to them ...... and as we all know rates bounce up and down almost by the minute.

I objected strongly to being charged in US$ .................. and the solution has been for me to declare that my place of Residency is the UK :-S

Nah Jax they just think Aussies are rich... ;-) ;-)

One would think the rate would be the same across the board no matter where you hail from... :-S

It's like everything, it has to be fair and be seen to be fair... :-)

I totally agree.
I have already opted out of continuous, and will send my query tomorrow.

sorry to take over the first poster's thread.

jax

jax Report 12 Feb 2012 05:48

As I said earlier I recieved an email telling me I would be charged £34.95 I think? which was the amount I first paid as a Gold member two years ago.

When the day came and I had opted out of continuous payment it was back to what it should of been of £9.95

If that is what you have been charged just for standard then I would complain

moonbi

moonbi Report 12 Feb 2012 05:38

No Jax. I am a standard member.

jax

moonbi Report 12 Feb 2012 05:18

Persephone

Persephone Report 12 Feb 2012 02:24

Why is yours $A80 Moonbi?

Mine has always been $NZ19.95.... I think.....but anyway I wouldn't be bothered paying more than that... and our dollar is less value than yours...

I've been robbed lol ;-)

I was charged just under £10 for 12 months when I renewed today

Joy

Joy Report 11 Feb 2012 14:29

I should like to renew for £ .01 in April, please ;-)

jax

jax Report 11 Feb 2012 04:58

If they offered it to me for that price I would hold them to it :-)

The one I recieved quoted the gold membership price I paid two years ago although I have been a standard member for the last eighteen months?

I have heard of people being offered platinum for £10 so it would not surprise me

moonbi

moonbi Report 11 Feb 2012 03:32

$79.95.aus

That's sounds too good to be true.

No doubt someone from GR will read this post and check it out and make any corrections.

Maybe you should delete this thread before they see it.
