Hi Sue,

I don't have the death cert for the mother, just for the daughter. They are both on the index as Christina, rather than Christiana.

Oops, said she died in October but it was September.....

Died aged 21 months on the 10th September 1899 at 12 Railway Street, Stockport. Daughter of John Regan an Earthenware Hawker. Bronchitis 3 months certified. Informant Elizabeth Rowles, Great Aunt, present at the death.

Thank you Brummiejan.

Jane was my grandmother born 1886 in Bury. Norah was her youngest surviving sibling.

They also had at least 3 brothers......
Joseph b1890 in Bolton.
Richard bc 1893, not sure where because I've never found his birth reg either, just his baptism in 1893 in Bolton and a death in 1896.
The third brother's name is unknown.

John a widower is in a lodging house in Preston in 1901 but the children are not with him.

Thank you Londonbelle.

Elizabeth Rowles was the sister of Christiana mother, Jane Highland (Hireland, Hyland, Ireland, Island), nee Hibbs (Ibbs).

Jane is in Bury in 1901 (under the name Ireland) with several of her grandchildren, but the Regans are not with them. She was born in Hanley, Staffordshire but her pob changes with every census.

Thank you Brummiejan.

That does look like John & Joseph in1911. When my grandmother, Jane, married in 1907 she gave her father's name as John, occupation China Dealer, but said he was deceased!!

Christina(Lancashire)

Christina(Lancashire) Report 12 Jun 2011 18:14

Thank you Astra.

That does look the most likely entry for John in 1901....but I wonder why he was in Preston and what he did with the rest of his children.

I think from their occupations that they were Travellers/Gypsies/Romanies (I found a brother of Christiana Highland living in a caravan at a fairground in 1891) so I suppose the other children may have all been separated about through their extended family.

Thank you Sue.

No, I haven't seen Jane's baptism record before. It must have been added recently. Thank you so much for finding it for me.

LOL! From Hawker, to China Dealer, to Auctioneer. Do you think John had delusions of grandeur?

Thanks Sue.

I also thought that might be Richard, but he was baptised in 1893 and aged 3 at death in 1896.

Unless his birth registration was delayed. Could a child have been registered 2 years after birth?

It's more likely that the parents got the wrong age for him when he died.

I don't think the birth is her in Stockport. Looks like that Norah died as a 1yr old..........

But the marriage is spot on thank you. She gave her age as 23, which is consistant with her age in 1911, and her supposed birth date of November 1895.

Thank you so much for searching for me. I really appreciate it.

Sue In Yorkshire. Report 12 Jun 2011 20:11

So you have Norah's Marriage cert....????

Is it possible that she was registered in another christian name and her parents called her Norah...???

Christina(Lancashire)

Christina(Lancashire) Report 12 Jun 2011 21:00

Yes, I have a copy of Norah's marriage cert, and I know she celebrated her 80th birthday in November 1975. In later life she dropped the h and used the name Nora.

As to being registered under another name, I just don't know, Sue.

There are only 3 male Regans registered in 4th 1/4 1895 and a Bertha Regan registered in 1st 1/4 1896, in Bolton.

Looking at the death index, all 4 had died by the end of 1897.

I suppose she may have been born elsewhere, but I think I've checked out all the other Norah Regans.

I'm beginning to suspect that she wasn't their child after all. The family appear to have lived in Bolton from 1890 to 1899.

Their other children seem to have been baptised soon after birth, but not Norah. She must have been aged around 2yrs old when she was baptised.

Christina(Lancashire)

Christina(Lancashire) Report 12 Jun 2011 21:22

The parents married in 1895, in Bury, Lancashire, Flick............

Married on the 23rd February 1885 at Bury Register Office.
John Regan age 25 years Bachelor, China Dealer, 24 Georgiana Street, Bury. Father Michael Regan, China Dealer.
Christaina Highland age 26 years Spinster, no occupation, 14 Bambury Street, Bury. Father Isaac Highland (deceased) Horse Dealer.
Witnessed by Richard Beech & Esther Bailey

Children are......
Jane b1886 in Bury.
Joseph b1890 in Bolton
Richard bc 1893 (no birth reg. Info from baptism & death reg.)
Unknown male b1891 - 1899. (Nothing known about him. Norah's daughter, recently deceased, remembered her mother's two brothers visiting when she was a young child, but couldn't remember their names).
Norah b1895 (no birth reg. Info from baptism, marriage cert., 1911 census and her daughter).
Christiana b1897 - d1899.

So on the 1901 census there should be the children Jane age 14, Joseph age 10, Unknown male age 2-9 and Norah age 5.
