My grandparents were married in Scarborough, North Yorkshire in 1908 and I am trying to find out when/how they moved to Chantilly. Grandpa was a farrier for the Rothschilds in Chantilly. My Aunt Violet Tindale was born in Chantilly in 1908/09 and my father, Reginald Tindale on 5 April 1910. I have emailed the Mayor's Office in Chantilly but have not received a reply. What I would like to know is when Grandpa first moved to France and when they returned to Scarborough - this was prior to 1934. He also served in the 1914/18 war but cannot trace which British regiment he was with - would he have volunteered? |

Could you give the grandparent's names please? It might be possible to find them on outgoing or homeward passenger lists. Scrub that idea - they'd have probably travelled by ferry and there doesn't seem to be lists for those. |

Not much of a mystery as to when they emigrated - they married 1908 and the first child born Chantilly 1908/9! |

Grandparents names were John and Lena Tindale and I wondered if Grandpa had worked in France prior to marrying in Scarborough in 1908. Reginald and Violet were both born in Chantilly, 1910 and 1908/9 respectively. Violet was 19 when she died in 1928 in Scarborough whilst on holiday. Grandpa worked as a farrier for the Baron Gustave de Rothschild whose address was 23 Avenue Mariony. Would like to know when he first left the UK and then returned to live in UK. |

If anyone can help re tracing John Tindale (Tindall) on Medal rolls would be a help as then I should be able to trace his regiment? His d.o.b is 26 October 1881 in Sheriff Hutton Yorkshire. Thanks |

I now know that my grandfather John Tindale was in the Army Veterinary Corps - his Regtl. no SE/33549 during the 1914-18 and was awarded the Victory and British medals. The roll number is RAVC/101 B.16 Page 839 |

I do not see a John Tindale who could be your Grandfather in the ancestry records. |

Thanks for that so it would appear that I should not ask someone to research for me at the National Archives if there is a likely hood his records were destroyed/damaged? I am unable to go to Kew myself. I only have the WW1 Medal Rolls Index Card details printed from Ancestry records. |

Thank you. The births were my Aunt Violet and my father Reginald. What I am trying to get to the bottom of is (1) when my grandfather John went to France in the first place to be farrier to the Baron Gustave Rothschild in Chantilly. He married my grandmother in Scarborough North Yorkshire in 1908 and (2) when and where did he enlist in the Army Veterinary Corps to serve in the 1914-18 war. |

However, since there is obviously a record of the children's births in France, the record of the first birth could narrow the timeframe (unless you already have that date). |

Thanks again all. Yes my aunt Violet died when she was only 19 on 22 Sept. 1928 in Scarborough while she was staying with my paternal G.Grandparents. I have a copy of the death cert. |
