I found a family history society dedicated to Aldersons everywhere. They have family trees etc.
They also have a Roll of Honour for all the Aldersons who died in the Wars. There are 10 Thomas Aldersons for WW1 - I guess they correlate to the 10 found on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site.
However, unlike the the CWGC entries, these all have family details.
None of them appear to be the right Thomas so it's looking less likely that he did die in the War, but the Society might be able to help with researching.

EDIT sorry meant to say it may still be worth following up Jan's idea as the afhs say they can only give details of those *that they know of*

Hello Margaret........ I have been following this thread with interest....
Thought I would google "Ada may alderson" to see what came up..... in the years 2000 & 2006 there is a Carol looking for the same lady...Says that Ada is her Grandmother. Same info as you have given..... She had no response to her request..
said left husband & children 1939..... so .... looked for another marriage of an ada may powell after that date....(have not yet looked for death of Alfred Thomas.) found in1941 Ada M Powell / Barker at Wetherby which I believe has been mentioned before.... Then looked for a death of Ada May Barker..... Ada May Barker birth 1909.... death 1988 York district. ..... Could this be her I wonder???

Margaret, try ordering her death from the local register office:
Email:
[email protected]
Give them the details, offer to pay the fee,
If this were a "normal" death, i.e. one married name, one maiden name, I would say specify that and you would pay nothing. But in your mother;s case she seems to have chosen more than one maiden name, and more than one marital status on marriage. So I think you'll have to swallow the fee. Which I think is £9 from a local office.

Hello All
I have had a very frustrating day. Sunny day..................so I thought, why not have a day out and drive over to Wetherby and pick up another Fred Barker / Ada Margaret Powell marriage certificate....... The original one. Then I could check Ada's signature with my parents marriage certificate. BUT THE REGISTRY OFFICE WAS CLOSED.......... only opens Tues' / Thursday.
Spent the rest of the day trying to order the Jones/Barker/Alderson death certificate, but can't get GRO to accept my password. Will try again later.
Margaret.

Have you tried register office quoting parents names.
Register Office of Births.Death &Marriages. 40 Old Elvet. Durham. County Durham DH1-3HN. 0191 3864077.
There is a possible chance its been omitted from the indexes you see online.

Bless you margaret ! of course I haven,t given up.
I have been looking and thinking about your mother etc but I haven,t found out anything new either except have you tried to see if there were any articles in any newspapers eg obituaries, death notices regarding your grandparents or dad.
It may be worth seeing if they are mentioned as you know exactly when they died, e mail the local library in the area they died asking them to do a search for you.
It is sad that you lost both grandparents and your dad in such a short space of time. I would have been surprised that your mother did not know about the funerals. There would have been people around who would have known about her and her departure, the problem is finding them.
I hope that the certificate for blackpool is your mum,if it is you can go down the path of seeing if she left a will, newspaper articles etc, and of course maybe get in touch with the informant who registered the death.
Fingers crossed it will not be a long wait and you will have some sort of closure soon.
warmest wishes corrinne

Hello Margaret. There are probably lots of people following your thread but not posting as they haven't found anything new (like me)!
If anyone lives in the area perhaps they could check out the Crook war memorial to see if your grandfather Thomas William Alderson is on it???
It is a listed building (I googled it) : CROOK AND WILLINGTON THE GREEN (West end) NZ 13 NE Billy Row 24/26 War Memorial
II
War memorial. Circa 1918. Portland stone. Life-size figure of soldier, hands resting on rifle, on c. 4m. high pedestal which has unfluted Corinthian columns at corners supporting entablature with wide cornice. Low square step to plinth; pedestal has names of dead 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 on all sides, one side devoted to Billy Row, one to Grahamley, one to Roddymoor and one to White Lea districts. Fluted frieze and laurel wreath above each panel.
EDIT no he's not on that one. See here:

Hi Margaret.
Just an idea have you searched to see if there are any "wills" from your dad, grandparents etc in case your mother is mentioned in them. If you haven,t got them it may be worth going down this avenue too. Keep smiling and never give up you will find her.

From page 6:
I can only find this birth for a possible Ada M(argaret) Alderson who would have been 39 on 13 Oct 1952:
This was it, but it isn't relevant.
Births Mar 1913 (>99%) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alderson Ada M Pattison Reeth 9d 1331
If that is the one who married John A Jones, whose father was Alfred Thomas Alderson, then I cannot find a marriage of such a man to a woman with the surname Pattison.
So forget it.
We have to wait for that death cert in Blackpool.

Hello Madmeg
The death certificate of Ada May Powell in St Austell. Cornwall was incorrect. Ada was born in cornwall and the father was named Patterson. I was so dissapointed- I felt I had at last found Ada May, that I destroyed it. sorry................. won't do that again.

Thanks Margaret for all those answers, it must have taken you a lot of time to wade through all our questions and get it all down.
Corinne, I haven't even thought about Alfred Thomas Powell's family - was concentrating on Margaret's wish to find out what happened to her mother. You've not lost the plot, Margaret has made a few mistakes in some of her postings with all the fellas called Thomas something or something Thomas, so stick with us.
I checked the Commonwealth Graves Commission website - there are only 10 Thomas Aldersons listed dying in WW1, none with middle name William. A high proportion served with a Durham force, but most were too young to be "our" Thomas. There were however a few with no age given, but none with the parents that Margaret thinks she has identified in 1911, and from his marriage certificate. Maybe he went off to war and simply didn't come back - or didn't come back to his wife. It happened.
Yes Margaret, afraid you have to get that death cert. It might prove I am an idiot and have cost you money, for which I am sorry, but sometimes it has to be done to eliminate possibilities. I have 6 death certs for my John Kelly, and none are right.
We want the death cert to say she was born in Durham at least.
Incidentally, what was wrong with the death cert of Ada May Powell who died in - forgotten, but down south, like Torquay or similar area? That birth date was alarmingly similar to the one your sister remembers. Give us the details of it please.
