I have been looking and thinking about your mother etc but I haven,t found out anything new either except have you tried to see if there were any articles in any newspapers eg obituaries, death notices regarding your grandparents or dad.

It may be worth seeing if they are mentioned as you know exactly when they died, e mail the local library in the area they died asking them to do a search for you.

It is sad that you lost both grandparents and your dad in such a short space of time. I would have been surprised that your mother did not know about the funerals. There would have been people around who would have known about her and her departure, the problem is finding them.

I hope that the certificate for blackpool is your mum,if it is you can go down the path of seeing if she left a will, newspaper articles etc, and of course maybe get in touch with the informant who registered the death.

Fingers crossed it will not be a long wait and you will have some sort of closure soon.

I have had a very frustrating day. Sunny day..................so I thought, why not have a day out and drive over to Wetherby and pick up another
Fred Barker / Ada Margaret Powell marriage certificate.......
The original one. Then I could check Ada's signature with my parents
marriage certificate. BUT THE REGISTRY OFFICE WAS CLOSED..........
only opens Tues' / Thursday.

Spent the rest of the day trying to order the Jones/Barker/Alderson death certificate, but can't get GRO to accept my password. Will try again later.

Margaret, try ordering her death from the local register office:

Give them the details, offer to pay the fee,

If this were a "normal" death, i.e. one married name, one maiden name, I would say specify that and you would pay nothing. But in your mother;s case she seems to have chosen more than one maiden name, and more than one marital status on marriage. So I think you'll have to swallow the fee. Which I think is £9 from a local office.

Thought I would google "Ada may alderson" to see what came up..... in the years 2000 & 2006 there is a Carol looking for the same lady...Says that Ada is her Grandmother. Same info as you have given..... She had no response to her request..

said left husband & children 1939..... so .... looked for another marriage of an ada may powell after that date....(have not yet looked for death of Alfred Thomas.) found in1941 Ada M Powell / Barker at Wetherby which I believe has been mentioned before.... Then looked for a death of Ada May Barker.....
Ada May Barker birth 1909.... death 1988 York district. ..... Could this be her I wonder???

I have sent for the Ada Margaret Barker / John Aurthur Jones death Certificate.
and am awaiting arrival ?

looking back through the pages i see that her father was living in Willington Durham.1911 Anyone know where to get the voters list for war years for this area as he might be named as absent voter to confirm if he was in ww1 perhaps

I found a family history society dedicated to Aldersons everywhere. They have family trees etc.

They also have a Roll of Honour for all the Aldersons who died in the Wars. There are 10 Thomas Aldersons for WW1 - I guess they correlate to the 10 found on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site.

However, unlike the the CWGC entries, these all have family details.

None of them appear to be the right Thomas so it's looking less likely that he did die in the War, but the Society might be able to help with researching.

I am a member of the Alderson family history society. I joined four years ago.
and there are no matches to my Thomas William Alderson. I did find a second cousin we shared a g. grandfather, but couldn't help me in my search.But we have become great friends.

local paper and the acknowledgements, but nothing else........

Can you help solve a family's wartime love mystery?
A WOMAN is appealing to Ilkley residents to help her trace the grandmother she has never seen.

Carol Holdsworth's maternal grandmother lost contact with her family

following an illicit war time love affair.

Mrs Holdsworth is hoping to piece together her family tree - and solve a

mystery which has haunted her family for years.

Mrs Holdsworth, of Bradford, has spent months searching for her long lost

relations.

She knows that her grandparents, Alfred Thomas Powell and Ada May Powell, nee Alderson, were married at on July 23, 1927, at Bradford Registry Office.

The couple had three children Muriel, Carol's mother, Joseph and Margaret.

Some time during the Second World War they separated and Ada left with another man who worked at Norman's Caf, in Shipley - leaving no trace.

Earlier this year, Carol managed to track down one of the grandparents' children, her Uncle Joseph, in South Africa - after a search of the world-wide web.

Mrs Holdsworth said: "He was really easy to find. It only took a few weeks. It is like when you see these television

programmes of people being reunited you wonder what you going to say."

They are now in regular contact by e-mail and Mr Powell was able to give her the next piece of the jigsaw, which could help her find her grandmother.

He believes that she worked in a public house, in Ilkley, some time in the 1940's.

It is thought the couple never divorced but it is possible that Mrs Powell remarried after the death of her estranged husband in 1950.

Mrs Powell did attempt to get in touch with her children after she left, through their school, but later had no further

contact. It is possible that Ada is still alive - and could even have another family. She was born on May 3, 1909 and she would be 91 years-of-age.

Mrs Holdsworth hopes that somebody in Ilkley will hold the key to her family mystery. She said: "Somebody might remember something. It would just be nice to know what happened to her.

"It is intriguing because we have never met her. It is not the closeness you want, it is wanting to know if she is still alive. It is the missing link."

Carol's uncle will be reunited with the family after more than 40 years when he travels to Bradford next month. Anyone with any information about Ada should contact Mrs Holdsworth on 01274 542201

Margaret sorry to hear that there was nothing relevant in the obituaries, worth a try though. What next? did you have any success locating any wills? are you in touch with uncle joseph in south africa from this article?

What about mining records? There's lots of information out there. Do you know which colliery your grandfather is likely to have worked at? I found some records relating to Thomas Alderson but not Thomas William.

Yes I knew about the article in The Telegraph and Argus...........
Carol is my niece the daughter of my late sister Muriel.
Uncle Joe in South Africa is my brother and he visits each year.
Carole has searched for her grandmother for many years. Carole and I are in touch and with the help of another good friend Anne, we have been down a lot of roads, but we can't find the birth certificate or those missing links. I don't know anything about the guy in the cafe' in Shipley.
I think there is a lot of guess work in the article. I don't know anything about the link with Ilkley.and the birth date has never reveiled anything. We just don't know
Thomas William Alderson Born 1888 address on his birth certificate is 19 Stanley Colliery. Crook.1911 census states that Thomas was a hewer Stanley Colliery..We could not find anything about mining accidents regarding Thomas.

I also notice in the copy email you sent me you have given Ada's name as Ada Margaret. Whilst this is the name she married John A Jones in, the death is recorded as Ada MAY Jones.

Well, that article from your niece ties up with my obscure thinking, cos the Fred Barker that Ada Margaret married was a cafe manager and lived in Baildon which is near Shipley, and Ada lived at the Stanhope Hotel (Rodley, not Ilkley, but not far away), and the Ada Margaret Barker/Alderson who married John A Jones in Blackpool was a cafe manageress. The place they lived is a Thai Restaurant now.

Changing the subject, still looking for the death registration of thomas william alderson, how sure are you that you have the right man, here are a few to choose from from bmd around 1888.
