Hello everyone, hope you've all had a lovely day :)
I'll add here quickly whilst this thread is still here just to let you know that I didn't delete. Didn't get any notification from GR. Pity as I still hadn't read Cynthia's post and a few others :(
I didn't see anyone being nasty when I checked. To be honest it wasn't even a criticism of GR. I like this site most of the time.
Oh well, it's main aim (for me that is) was to let differing people express their views which I think it did. There were a few different opinions on there which I thank you all for.
And I got to speak to some new faces which can't be a bad thing :) Some of you should pop over to chat and general more often and we can have a proper chat :) youll see me go off at tangents all the time there lol
Thanks everyone.

Just got in and was about to look for the thread lol.
Spent the day in a quite interesting fashion, basically talking to people, the overall impression I got was that whilst some were confident about their own ability in their area of expertise, when thrown into something they knew little about they 'undervalued' their own innate abilities, and some sought reassurance ( just in a general 'do you think I could?' way).
Applied to here it brings me back to an ounce of encouragement often being more effective than a pound of 'facts and figures' :) ( I seem to be determinedly non-metric lol)

Hi, Kay???? you are a star, many thanks, I guess things will become clearer with time, especially if I join in the boards more often and can learn as I go. You all have such a wealth of experience to tap into.
Once again many thanks. x

Hey thanks, Eddisagrandad thank you I will look at that explanation. Cynthia I have not gone red I have gone a sort of "grey/whitish round the gills" LOL cos I am sorry to say Cathy that its all double dutch to me, but I am extremely glad that Joy~KM owned up to not knowing either. I used computers at work (some while ago now) but knew wot I needed to know (if you know what I mean) Here is another daft question: Is that how helpers can quote the number of the Post/Poster ?

Have clarified with GR with regards to "duplicate posting"
They would prefer to just have one thread concerning "family/names" etc put on a board (say records for instance), rather than same question being asked on different boards, (records, tips, TTF etc)
but: you are allowed to post on another board regarding the same "family/names" if you are asking another question or are requesting advice or tips and not what you have already asked / received.

All are here in the first instance to construct *their* own family reseach,no one is endorced by the site to be someone else reseacher,if help is asked for then anyone can assist, but on the surface it appears that helpers have put themselves aside to enforce how they want members to be.
GR shouldnt need moderators, almost all who use the site are adults lots are senior at that and dont need a heavy baling out if they stray from the rigged straight line thats being raged about, its not being a life threat to anyone------
I agree,,help but a little more,
Hi ? I think you could have already had infomation posted,I'll just find it and you can see if its of help.
or,,,,YOU! already have asked this, why are you asking again.or are you just takin the mickey or do you just enjoy having the same information found over and over again
I know which would be more acceptable,,,,,,,dont you.

wellybobs, I had previously had no idea what " URL" stood for :-) Would you like to add it to my genealogical abbreviations thread? :-)

Clear as mud now as they say......
URL shortening is a technique on the World Wide Web in which a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) may be made substantially shorter in length. This involves using an HTTP Redirect on a domain name that is short to link to a web page which has a long URL. For example, the URL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URL_shortening can be shortened to http://goo.gl/Hsxsn and http://goo.gl/m0GwG
Kind regards
Cathy

The URL to this thread is
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/tips_board/thread/1255716
Take a look at your brower bar - top of your screen.....beginning http etc.
It's okay. I had to learn too! :))

In my opinion, the main thing that this site has got going for it is the boards.
It's not about critising members for not using the boards correctly but helping them to use them in a way of most benefit to the majority. I can't say everyone because I believe that this is unachievable.
It was said on the now deleted thread that it's not what you say but the way you say it and think if GR are not going actively moderate the boards to stop a lot of the backbiting and bickering, then maybe if friendly standardized responses can be agreed upon in relation to duplicate threads, it will be a step in the right direction. However, any response should include a URL to the thread with the most responses. Only by having all the information can helpers know what has been discounted as well as what has been accepted as the most probable to help break down brick walls.

But not benificial to some members if their actions on how they use the boards are under constant critisim,( neither is it benifical to the site owners) ,this sways some not to return so loss of membership, and word of mouth spreads how unfriendly the site can be to some forlorn new /newer members,,as seen posted round other sites after an experience.
But we pay only for the core service and that is to construct a family tree, finding family links. a use of any records that the site may have in its offering..and nothing more.

What a shame it's been deleted. SRS was doing a great job as chairperson and keeping the debate on track.
GR should accept constructive criticism from it's members as a way towards improving the site. All businesses need to make improvement to compete in an ever changing market and who better to know what improvements need implementing than the users of the site.

Well, this morning, the last posts seem to feature the fact that some helpers only look at certain boards and that lookups were posted all over the place.....can't remember the exact words. My reply was along the lines of....
As someone who peruses ALL of the boards, I can confirm that people ARE asking for lookups on all boards....reminding me of the song...
Any time, any place, anywhere, There's a wonderful world we can share...
and wouldn't it be nice if there was some give and take on these boards!!

Well, SRS isn't know to delete without prior warning, but it is a shame if GR did. There may have been a little bit of sniping in the body of the thread, but it never really blew up into anything.
IMO, they could have closed it to new posts and just added something along the lines of 'we will take your suggestions for consideration.'

Would say it was removed by the *Firm*
For.
Someone imploding thier way was the all that mattered
GR taken umbrage to the site being overhauled as to how its thought the site should be run.
They are fed up with constant critisim of how other site members use the boards.
or the OP thought it had run its course.
and this thread will go as its not allowed to question or disect why a thread has been removed by them should they think it warrant its removal.}}

Hi Cynthia, thanks for the reply, I thought I was going potty (should not be surprised if I am lol) I hope SRS can throw some light on it. Do GR let you know if they have deleted a thread? maybe they were getting fed up with us complaining about them cheers. M.
