Thanks, Hazel, yes I knew that but I respond to so many threads that it doesn't take long to lose one. When I found this one it was on page 3 of my threads so I bumped it up to page 1. Mind you, by the time I receive my will it will probably be down to page 10!

Just wanted to move the thread up a little so that I can find it when and if I ever receive the will I had ordered. I promised to let you know when it happened. Mine was the one ordered from Canada on 18th August with an international money order. Nothing yet.

Elisabeth Report 16 Sep 2010 11:42

Morning all,

I am still waiting for the third of the three I ordered. The cheques were all cashed at the same time. The other two arrived on 11th.

Do you know, if they don't actually find the wills, do they let you know? I did give them the details from the Ancestry entry, so I am surprised they are coming at different times.

Elisabeth x

Edit: My greatgrandmother's will does show 'primogeniture' or whatever it is called. She did divide everything between her children, but also did give a cash amount to her eldest grandson only. That was sad as she had 6 or 7 grandchildren by then. A hundred years later, I am sad for my Mum, and the others, who got nothing!

I'm still waiting.

Applied on 12th August. Cheque cashed 19th August. Told by the office it would take about a month.

Had a glimmer of hope from Elisabeth yesterday as my cheques were cleared on the 26th so just one day after and I was really hoping that my wills would be posted today, but sadly no, will have to carry on waiting. Wish they would hurry up though

As they don't offer refunds all cheques are banked on receipt of applications.

It's a waiting game at the mo due to Ancestry's release of part of the calenders.

Seeing on your statement the cheque's being cashed it's an indication your at the top of the pile just that they've got your application.

Hi Lady cutie,
I applied to Manchester and they replied straight away that they'd sent my request to York as they only keep Wills for 1 year.

Postman just been and I have two of the three wills - cheques went through my bank on 25th.

One doesn't tell me anything much, but the other has knocked down a brickwall for me! I have been searching for Great Uncle Alfred, the last of Granddad's siblings for years and there he is, mentioned in the will, as 'being in India'. He had disappeared after a letter dated 1899, and this will is dated 1917, so I shall now look into all of that.

Yes your right Peter ,
I was going to apply at the Manchester office but thought

the nearest one to me ..i'm in North Wales .

Hazel,

As I understand it you can request a will from any probate office no matter where the will was proved. In my (impressively speedy) case the will was proved in Peterborough but I applied to the Birmingham office and received an instant reply, that was actually posted in Stoke on Trent!

I would therefore urge people not to make automatic applications to London or York as they will be oversubscribed. Choose a less prominent office from the HMCS list.

I sent off for my gt. grandfather's will 18 August from Canada with an international money order. It was the London office because that's where the will was probated. Like others I am waiting, not very patiently! Will let you know when it arrives.

Hi Chris

I was in exactly the same position as you. I had searched forever for the death of my grandfather (who had left his family in the 1920's) and then by accident came across a marriage for his name when I was looking for something else.

Sent off for the certificate and I was almost past myself by the time it arrived 6 weeks later. Really worth the wait though as I am now in contact with my father's half sister (granddad's daughter from his second marriage). No one in the family knew of her existence.
