Sarah Report 28 Sep 2010 09:36

Hmm but I can't identify him sufficiently enough to send off for his birth certificate its a right pain!

InspectorGreenPen Report 28 Sep 2010 09:24

You need his birth certificate to find where he was born and his mother's maiden name. His marriage cert won't help you there.

Sarah Report 28 Sep 2010 09:18

Hurray the certificate came this time...but unfortunately I'm still not any the wiser from it. I was hoping that it might say where he was born and his mother's name but it doesn't. I also hoped to confirm Margaret's post above from the 1911 census. This gives a different address and occupation for his father (although they could have moved and the occupation could be interchangable (machine fitter on census, engineer on marriage cert)). He is an enigma my Charlie!

Sarah Report 22 Sep 2010 14:17

No - I did single s, and also asked for Charles and not Charlie as it says on the record. So I've made those amendments. Will try the registry office if I get knocked back again.

how about trying the local registry office to see if they can help with the marriage cert? Did you put the "ss" on the end of her surname

Sarah

Sarah Report 22 Sep 2010 13:46

Ah, think I know where I went wrong. I've ordered again with some revisions.

Oh dear everyone. After waiting and waiting for the Barras Hill marriage certificate from the GRO they've finally decided to give me a refund saying they can't find it. It seems like Charles Hill does not want to be properly identified, this seemed like my only way of finding out where he was from and who his family were. I'm feeling a bit upset now.

Great, thanks. I reckon I've found her on the familysearch website but no clue as to her maiden name. This is after records began so I could send for the certificate now. All these certificates, it soon adds up doesn't it when you've been bitten by the bug!

If you are looking for a death that is after civil registration and have several to choose from, then the local register office will help find the right one, if you are able to give them additional information, such as a man's occupation, last known address or names of possible informants, and for a woman, the name of her husband and whether deceased.

Madmeg Report 26 Aug 2010 18:37

Sarah, it isn't a case of the date of 1797 being outside website dates, but being well before civil registration was introduced. Register offices will only have records from July 1837 onwards. For earlier dates you need to consult parish records (baptisms, marriages and burials). Many of these can be found on the family search website:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

This takes you to the International Genealogical Index. There's a bit of learning to do to use it to its full potential, but for starters put in a person's name, choose christening, marriage or burial, the year, and assuming UK choose Region British Isles, Country and County. You can leave any of these out if unsure but it will pull up a lot of entries. Not all events are on here, there are lots of gaps, and beware of "submitted" entries which are unproven. The best entries are "extracted" entries which are taken from actual parish records and double-checked.

There is also this site:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=O

which may have different entries.

Some counties have their own sites with parish records online.

Ha yes it's a Smith that I'm stuck with - the number of Annie Smiths is unbelievable - and coupled with a John Miller it makes it extra difficult. Still I'll look at it that way - I'm full of popular genes and not common in any way!

Just to go back to the original subject, in another branch of the family I'm looking for a maiden name again - only this time for someone born in 1787 and so her birth and marriage records will be outside the dates on websites I think. I've looked for her death but have choice of several to go at (Comm... I mean popular name again...). So am I right in thinking that I need to contact the registry office covering the area of her birth and marriage (Brill and Bicester respectively) to see if they are able to look up records this far back?

Thanks again.

Thank you Margaret worth noting. I've really learned from this thread and have been going great with other branches of the family. However I've just hit another dead end and will probably need to get another marriage certificate to move on with this so I'll look into what the Sheffield registry office do. Another case of too common names - what is it with my family and common names, why couldn't we be more imaginative!

Hi Sarah...... I find 90+ % of local offices will supply within the week....much quicker & they don't charge if they are unable to find correct one... given a phone no. they will phone to clarify details if needed..... having said that, there are a small percentage who do not do any certs. at all before c 1900... then you have to use GRO. A quick phone call is all that is needed to clarify, thus saving a few days. Hope you are lucky and recieve earlier.
(Google " register ofices, England & Wales " for addresses & phone nos.)

It must be the rotten British weather turning everyone to their computers.

Sarah Report 25 Aug 2010 09:03

Hello Margaret - yes that'll be Connie definately - Gatus isn't a common name, they were the only one in the Sheffield phonebook until their sons moved out - and I remember Alf dying when I was at primary school so 1983 will be right.

Madmeg- I ordered my certificate through the GRO website and the estimated despatch date given was 15 September. There was a more expensive option that would have had a quicker turnaround but I've just paid for my subscription on here so watching the pennies...

Thanks
Sarah

Sarah Report 24 Aug 2010 09:09

Connie's still alive, though in no fit state to help me with my enquiries unfortunately. My Mum will set me right on the year she was born when I see her next. She married Alf Gatus, I don't know when. I sent off for the marriage certificate of Charles Hill and Florrie Barras, though it looks like 3-4 weeks wait.
