Thank you everyone for your efforts overnight. The list that Jan gave at 21.03 looks the most likely given the information I have from earlier on in this thread and discussions with my Nan. A lot of those names listed there fit. Can anyone tell me (I don't have access to 1911 census) where that family came from - were they all born in Sheffield?

They come from a census record that Margaret found earlier as below. I do think it is the most likely. Whilst Charles was not listed as an engineer I have found that sometimes people gave the specfic job that they were doing in the census and in marriages the general profession was given(although I appreciate is a generalisation and may not always be the case)

Same family 1901:
Name: Charles Hill Age: 3 Estimated birth year: abt 1898 Relation: Son Father's Name: Charles Hill Mother's Name: Sarah Hill Gender: Male Where born: Smethwick, Staffordshire, England Civil parish: Smethwick Ecclesiastical parish: Holy Trinity County/Island: Staffordshire Registration district: Kings Norton Sub-registration district: Harborne ED, institution, or vessel: 42 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 130 Household Members: Name Age Charles Hill 26 >>> Machine Fitter Sarah Hill 26 Annie Hill 5 Charles Hill 3 Ada Hill 2 Kate Hill 3 Months
Julie
EDIT Registration district is Kings Norton so maybe that's the place to look for Charles' birth entry. This is almost certainly Kate in the March qtr of 1901, probably born January as the Census was taken on 31st March and she was 3 months old then.:
Births Mar 1901 Hill Kate King's N. 6c 486
Charles is 3 in 1901 and 13 in 1911 so possibly born late 1897?
Births Dec 1897 (>99%) Hill Charles William King's N. 6c 473
Only doubt about that one is they later had a William.
This could be Winnie/Gwen:
Births Mar 1904 (>99%) Hill Gwendoline King's N. 6c 534
There are also Frank, Ada and Wilfred in the right time frame.
Reg info:
KING'S NORTON REGISTRATION DISTRICT
Registration County : Worcestershire (1837-1912); Warwickshire (1912-24). Created : 1.7.1837. Abolished : 1.9.1924 (succeeded by Birmingham South district). Sub-districts : Balsall Heath; Edgbaston; Harborne; King's Norton; Smethwick. GRO volumes : XVIII (1837-51); 6c (1852-1912); 6d (1912-24).
Registers now divided between Birmingham, Sandwell and Worcestershire districts.
Hope that helps!

I have to admit to being very confused by the west midlands reg districts so someone who knows better may like to advise.
Can't understand why if the parents were both born Smethwick their marriage is registered in West Bromwich?

Thanks again everyone. As we keep coming to this family and they are the closest match in terms of names I think it must be them. I can't find any other Charles Hill son of Charles Hill born 1898 in the Sheffield area. Machine fitter sounds very like engineer and Winnie could be a shortened version of Gwendoline it's not difficult to get to Gwennie then Winnie. Looking at Smethwick on the map it is close to West Bromwich, plus my research in other parts of the family tells me that people did move around their area a lot in those days, probably for work as people needed to live close to their workplace. I've had a cursory look back at the family and it looks like Charles Snr's parents were from Bromsgrove which proves the point. Thanks again everyone for all your efforts.
