Sarah, it isn't a case of the date of 1797 being outside website dates, but being well before civil registration was introduced. Register offices will only have records from July 1837 onwards. For earlier dates you need to consult parish records (baptisms, marriages and burials). Many of these can be found on the family search website:

This takes you to the International Genealogical Index. There's a bit of learning to do to use it to its full potential, but for starters put in a person's name, choose christening, marriage or burial, the year, and assuming UK choose Region British Isles, Country and County. You can leave any of these out if unsure but it will pull up a lot of entries. Not all events are on here, there are lots of gaps, and beware of "submitted" entries which are unproven. The best entries are "extracted" entries which are taken from actual parish records and double-checked.

Some counties have their own sites with parish records online.

If you are looking for a death that is after civil registration and have several to choose from, then the local register office will help find the right one, if you are able to give them additional information, such as a man's occupation, last known address or names of possible informants, and for a woman, the name of her husband and whether deceased.

Great, thanks. I reckon I've found her on the familysearch website but no clue as to her maiden name. This is after records began so I could send for the certificate now. All these certificates, it soon adds up doesn't it when you've been bitten by the bug!

Oh dear everyone. After waiting and waiting for the Barras Hill marriage certificate from the GRO they've finally decided to give me a refund saying they can't find it. It seems like Charles Hill does not want to be properly identified, this seemed like my only way of finding out where he was from and who his family were. I'm feeling a bit upset now.

No - I did single s, and also asked for Charles and not Charlie as it says on the record. So I've made those amendments. Will try the registry office if I get knocked back again.

Hurray the certificate came this time...but unfortunately I'm still not any the wiser from it. I was hoping that it might say where he was born and his mother's name but it doesn't. I also hoped to confirm Margaret's post above from the 1911 census. This gives a different address and occupation for his father (although they could have moved and the occupation could be interchangable (machine fitter on census, engineer on marriage cert)). He is an enigma my Charlie!

You need his birth certificate to find where he was born and his mother's maiden name. His marriage cert won't help you there.

Hmm but I can't identify him sufficiently enough to send off for his birth certificate its a right pain!

so can you post details from marriage cert. names ages occupations. witness names etc----are they relatives?

OK, so he should be on the 1901 Census then. Given that he will only be about 2 or so, then his age should be fairly accurate.
