From my own experience I find that it usually takes about 7 days or so.

Researching:
Don't put off until tomorrow doing what you can do today. If you like doing it today you can do it again tomorrow. Be kind to your children for it is they who will decide which care home you end up in.

This site gives instructions about how and where to apply for a copy of a will or order of probate proven between 1858 and the present.

There is a useful inflation calculator for seeing what an estate would be worth today -

http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/education/Pages/inflation/calculator/flash/default.aspx

You just need to put in the amount and the date (year) and it calculates how much it would equate to now.

Belated reply.

The only way to determine whether or not any of your family members left a will is to either do make a personal search of the Probate Calendars or get the Probate Registry to search on your behalf, for which they make a charge.

Ancestry has this database online:

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1861-1941

Alternatively a personal search will involve you visiting the Probate Registry.

thank you all very much all useful stuff and now I am really going to prove my ignorance!
I have read all the post on how to apply for a copy of a will and it seems they can be a really useful piece of information in researching family history.
But how can I in the first instance determine whether or not any of my family members had ever written and submitted a will.
Help, sorry for being so dumb!!!!!!! :-S

You can ask the Probate Registry to make a search of the probate calendar on your behalf. Download the form from the link below, complete it and send it together with the fee to the address below.

Leeds District Probate Registry
York House
York Place
Leeds
LS1 2BA

Please provide the full name, address and date of death of the deceased, stating what you require and enclosing the appropriate fee which is £6 for the first copy and £1 for every additional copy .
