Oldhamers reign!

Well, Sylvia, I wasn't born in Oldham at all, but being born in Glossop meant I had lots of rellies in that area, and sometimes feel more Lancashire than I do Derbyshire, especially as most of my ancestors were Lancashire. And I speak Oldham!

I live in Rochdale and I'm ashamed to admit, I know nothing of Oldham at all.

There are two churches given. One St James and then someone pointed out another entry which stated St Marys. So I don't know which one now.

What I do know is that it isn't the st James at Oldham, as I have been in contact with them there and they didn't do weddings at that time.

I have e-mailed Lancashire records office and hopefully they can help me, and I will try to get to the Oldham records office maybe next week on my day off.

I did see that she was looking for St James Prestwich


.... and assumed it was wrong or misunderstood information, as the Parish Church in Prestwich was St Mary's

and that church gave rise to St Mary's, the Parish Church (still) in Oldham

The original poster is looking for a church called St James. There isn't one in Prestwich, the church there is St Mary's.
Nor can I find a St James in Oldham - correction I've found it now!

I also have relatives who married at St Mary's Prestwich in 1835

St Mary's Prestwich was the Parish Church for a large area that included Oldham.

In time, the parish got too large, and St Mary's was built in Oldham, and was the Parish Church for Oldham


Many people however still felt that St Mary's Prestwich was THE Parish Church .... and would walk to Prestwich to get married or have their child baptized.

Unfortunately, you will probably find that the record from that time will tell you very little.

The one I have for my great great grandfather just has his name, the bride's name, and the name of two witnesses.

Unfortunately, the witnesses were "professional" witnesses, paid a small amount to do so ...... their names appeared on 3 out of 4 marriage records on the same page.

This record was obtained by a contact who shared the same gt gt grandfather

........ she joined the Lancashire Family History Society and then put a message on their online forum, and some one came up trumps for us!


It seems that the records have not yet been filmed or digitized for that period of time, either for St Mary's Oldham or St Mary's Prestwich.

As St Chad's is CofE more likely to be that. Records fro St Mary's Oldham for 1832 are in the LRO. Unfortunately I will not be going there for a couple of weeks otherwise I would have a look for you.

The staff would usually do a quick look for you as you know the date if you email or phone them.

If you want me to look anything up later please pm me with the details and I will see what I can do.

I have no info on Robert apart from 2 possible baptisms at St chads Rochdale 1811.

I have a baptism for Christiana at St bartholomews c of e at Colne 1811

I have never found a baptism for any of their children or marriage come to that. Though they buried a child at st chads Rochdale.
Should I be looking at R.C churches?

that pilot search result also says St Mary's Oldham - if there was actually 2 marriages (one supposedly ST James in xxxx) and the other St Mary's it could perhaps indicate an RC marriage (see above)

I have been in contact with St James Oldham and they told me they didn't start officiating marriages until 1837 so it wasn't there..

I'll try Manchester records...

St mary's Oldham is on line in lan-opc - but not for the year you want. It may be worth contacting Lancs Record office as the records are held there.

There is also an RC church of St Mary in Oldham - records also at LRO

Prestwich cum Oldham was split into 41 parishes one of which was 1829 Oldham St James .website (sjameschurcholdham.info )will tell you more

The district church dedicated to St. James was built in 1829, by the parliamentary commissioners, at an expense of £8905, and is a neat edifice in the later English style, with a tower and campanile turret: the living is a perpetual curacy; net income, £150; also in the gift of the Rector.

Prestwich was part of Manchester but is now under control of Bury council.My fathers birth was registered in Prestwich in 1919 although he lived nearer to Manchester town centre so the boundaries have change a lot over the years suggest try Manchester council for location of St.James hope this helps
