Hi,
Could someone tell me how to go about tracing a death at sea please.
My daughter in law has lost a grandfather in the Yarmouth area in the 1890's and as Yarmouth is on the coast I wondered if he could have died at sea?
I would like to help her out by telling her how to look for him there.

I take it you've tried all the registered deaths on BMD?

If you'd like to put a name and age I can double check for youjust in case ?

I have checked all the things i can think of!

His name is Horace Alfonso Guiliano,he was married to Annie Brett in Norfolk
they had two children a son, his name was Frederick Horace Guiliano
and a daughter Ida Angelina Guiliano
All births deaths and marriage's for children are in the Yarmouth area.
Except for the death of Horace

Hi i forgot to say Horace marries Ann Brett in 1896
can't find him on the 1901 census and in 1911 Ann is a widow

So this is the son born 1898...so evidently Horace died after that, just putting it here so I can refer back for dates

No I'm not finding the family in 1901 either!

It's hard,
there are not many Guiliano's at all.
The family were Jewellers originally from Italy,quite famous i think.
But this member Horace is hard to trace,i'm actually beginning to think that Annie may have just said she was a widow,perhaps he just left the family in Norfolk.it's frustrating to say the least

From the marriage cert do you have an occupation for him that would put him at sea? ...Just thinking as the family is not showing in 1901 census, might they have been visiting abroad ( going on name I assume would have continental links) and he may have died whilst there?

According to what my daughter in law has found out.
The family were all Art Jewellers in gold.
They originally worked for Castalinie (forgive the phonetic's) in Naples,and moved here to extend that firm to London.
then the Guiliano's started their own firm in London.
I don't have the cert for the marriage,so far my daughter in law has sent off for the birth of her great gran Ida which hasn't arrived yet.

It's altogether a mystery that he went to Norfolk in the first place when all the other family members are in London!

I suppose Horace could have been abroad in 1901 as some sort of agent for the firm?
I've had a look at passenger lists and couldn't find him on there,although I'm not familiar with how to use them,so perhaps just didn't do the search properly

with the name transcribed as Guilliam. father is a goldsmith so that figures.

yep that's them,
so are you thinking that the name is the problem and might be spelt wrongly on different records?

Could be that , because on the 1881 it is transcribed as Gusliano! I was hoping that as Horace was 19 on that it would show his occupation...but it doesnt. just his father.. jeweller

I don't think i found the 1881 probably because of the misspelling.

I shall have a go at trying the variations

and i'll down load the 1881 for her.

He is not with his parents in 1891 , and I'm not finding him elsewhere so maybe he DID travel in his occupation...

Well I think that my daughter in law will have to do a lot of digging on him.

Because i have looked you have looked and we have both come to the same conclusion regarding Horace.

Lot's of food for thought regarding the surname,perhaps that will help her.
