IF ANYONE IS WANTING TO RESEARCH THORNABY ON TEES IN THE EARLY 1900'S THE BOOK BENEATH THE LAMPS REMEMBERING THORNABY, IS THE BOOK YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. THIS BOOK IS ALL ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND THEIR WAY OF LIFE, MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER IS MEANTIONED IN THE BOOK HERE IS THE EXTRACT

Another character that I remember was Granny Rocks. She used to gather horse muck ( there was plenty of it in those days ) and take it to her allotment in Thornaby Road. When the 'middens' were taken out of the houses and replaced with water closets, the holes in the back streets were filled in clinker, ready for the cobble stones being replaced. Granny Rocks would search among the clinker and take out any cinders she could find there. They were for the fire she would light in her garden, on which she boiled the water to make 'Scroudy', a mixture of bran, pollard, potato peelings and any kitchen refuse, to feed her poultry. Granny always came back from her garden carrying a bucketful of fresh vegetables. She always carried the bucket on her arm never down at her side.
