You're welcome :-)

Wishing success, whether major or minor, to all those with a drop of Irish in them :-)

Thank you very much Joy.

There's a wee drop of the Irish in quite a few of us in NZ.

Had my fingers firmly crossed for a lead on my GGrandmother's ancestry in the 1901....

The only info I have is from GGrandmother's marriage certificate, Census returns, an Employer's (Archivist) 'best guess' and family 'lore'.

Sadly 'fingers crossed' didn't help :-(

Hope others have more success.

http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-census.html
The 1901 census was taken on Sunday 31 March 1901 and recorded every man, woman and child alive on the island of Ireland on that date.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/help/about19011911census.html#whatcontain
The 1901 and 1911 censuses are the only surviving full censuses of Ireland open to the public. Both censuses cover the island of Ireland. They were released to public inspection in 1961, because of the stream of requests for information about people's ages, particularly those born before civil registration of births began in 1864.
The 1901 census was taken on 31st March 1901. The 1911 census was taken on 2 April 1911.
....................................

It is well worth exploring the National Archives site with its wealth of information including photographs, for instance here - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/exhibition/index.html

There will be errors and mistranscriptions, just as one finds in other countries' census.

Happy hunting :-)

Does anyone know when the 1901 Irish Census was taken? I've looked around the site but cannot find anything that says the time of year it was taken. I have a child who is 2 months old on the census so would like to know when it was taken so I can compare it to the birth record which I plan on getting.

When searching to-day I had trouble finding a family that I had on the 1911. The name was Edwards but nothing was showing up for the area I was looking in. I then tried the wildcard - just typed in Ed* - and found the family. The name had been spelled Edwardes. So it's worth trying wildcard searches if you are not finding who you are looking for.

I've noticed a few blips on the spelling of place names, which somewhere in the FAQ's they say they'll get cleaned up but it makes it rather slow going when the entire town/village is spelt wrong eg Raboo instead of Raloo.
On the plus side I've narrowed a couple of dates and found a few 'vanished' people.

Afraid so Sarah, i think that it has crashed for a while with the volume of people trying to get on.
I was browseing it last night but there were some rellies on 1911 that i could not find on 1901.
Will have another look later hopefully though.
