Hi Susan, I just thought I'd look at this thread to see if it was less depressing than the others that I've been following lately. It seems that it is.

Cynthia, if you have a scanner/printer it probably has an OCR option. I have tried it on mine with limited success. It is usually easier to retype than correct the OCR errors.

Hi everyone

Still having trouble getting on here but i will try Sylvia's suggestion.

Cynthia

I have been looking at Evelyn's thread today and have search a site with BDM's for India but nothing came up with the names we have to work with.

Searching the Internet for sites that have persons that received medals that have been to India.

My Mother was born in Burma in a British Garrison that had its own Hospital in 1932,her birth cert was easy to find ,she is on Free BMD, I know this is not India but the same scenario.

If Robert was in the Army as he says Diane'S Birth should be easy to find ,I also have Birth certs for My OH side of the family also born in India during British settlement that was in 1840 Camp Kurrachie India.

with the info we have I can't see us finding her birth,i will look in every now and then,I have the OH looking at all his war books to see if he can come up with anything .

Robert so very pleased to hear that your wife is on the mend .

Ken nice of you to join us .

I have come to the conclusion that this site is slowly dying ,there does not seem to be the requests for help that there was back in 2006 when I joined ,I do enjoy helping but i am nowhere as good as some of the other researchers so by the time I find the info someone else has already posted the info.

I must admit that I am doing more of my own research so I guess that is what I joined for in the first place.

Anyway back to it ,dishes waiting to be washed.

Thanks Sylvia,

My wife is well, having been told by the Hospital that they don't want to see her again in the next 12 months.

Old, the photo was taken in 1984 when they were about a year old. Sadly the tabby only lived another year but the black one lived to 16. We haven't had any since she died.

Cynthia, the electoral rolls on A were done by OCR. Mostly they are good but often the system gets out of phase and road names and elector's names get confused.

How old are the cats?

Nice to see you KenSE. :-)

Had never heard of that software - but it's interesting. Some old typeface could be quite blurry at times so I guess that's when the system falters. Thank you for that.

Off to get weighed soon :-(

Arthur, typed records tend to be transcribed by Optical Character Recognition software. It's cheap and fast but of course is prone to errors if the typeface is not clear or there are marks on the original.

Sylvia

Whilst I agree that old handwriting - and modern -can be difficult to read, official typed records merely have to be copied.

Have not seen any error messages, but have suffered having duplicate entries.

Always go to 'Post Date' on entry to arrive at the last posting. Never fails.

Another sunny day so off to the garden.

Hi Sue, and everyone

Sue ............... don't try to go back by pages. I now always click on Post Date .............. it takes right to the most recent postings. No problems with error or slowness.

You have to then scroll down the page to find the last posting that you had read.

I'm having problems with Error when trying to submit posts ................ I reckon I get that about 85-90% of the time. It makes everything so slow!

I find I am spending less and less time on GR.

Arthur ......................... one of my lines is Schofield. I could not find them in one census ........... and finally asked on GR for help.

Someone found them, very quickly ........................... SILUFIELD :-S :-S :-S

When I looked at the image ........ it was Schofield!

BUT as Cynthia said, the transcribers have to write what they see, not what they think they see, or even what they know it should be.

and some have great problems with old handwriting, or copper plate as it used to be known.

anne .............. that must have a great night out!

sally ....... hope things are OK???

Robert ............. how lovely to see you. How is your wife doing???

John .......... nice to see you. I gave up Internet Explorer last year. I now use Firefox Mozilla, which I downloaded for free from the internet.

Has any one heard from / about Reece recently???

take care everyone

Ooooooh.....Anne, I'm quite jealous, that is one play I would really love to see. Not very keen on musicals but love dramas. I'm sure the money was well spent - especially as you had such a good time.

Arthur, some of the mistranscriptions on Ancestry are incredible but I think that those who transcribe have to put what they actually see, not what they think it should be!!

Don't forget to look on Google images to see if there are any photographs of the area in Suffolk that you are researching - I've found some really good ones of my interests.

Mixed weather for us really - lovely sunshine but chilly and now it's gone all grey and miserable looking :-(

No grandchildren today but son is coming for a meal after he finishes work. They are now growing teenagers with social lives of their own - but I do miss them.

I think I had better do some tidying up round me, it looks as though someone has emptied the paper bin over my chair...... :-D

Take care, keep well and love to you all........Cx <3

Enjoying the Spring weather and gardening.

Have made some progress on my extended family tree. When you get the answers from someone else you wonder how you missed the info in the first place.

Transcription errors do not help. The official record was correct, but Ancestry had name as HAACE not Haack. No wonder I could not find the death. Difficult to see how it occurred as 'E' and 'K' are not even close on the keyboard.

Once the garden has been tidied, I must pay a visit to Suffolk to see if I can take my family back beyond 1750. Would also be nice to photograph churches associated with the family and the cottage where some of them lived in Sudbury.

We were very naughty yesterday & spent money we cant really afford to spend.

21 years ago yesterday my OH moved in with me - so I thought we should celebrate & I am a big Agatha Christie Fan - I have all her books - 21 years ago we went to London & saw the Mousetrap.

It is now on its 60th year tour & came doen to our local theatre - it seemed an omen to be shown on the day of our anniversary. So last october I booked two tickets & then booked us in for a meal at the local restaurant.

We had a lovely day together & very expensive meal (well it was for us) and then spent the evening at the theatre (not as expensive as London). However i feel very naughty as I spent more in one day than i do all month.

On June 24th we will have been married 15 years - it would have been nice to have a couple of nights away but that is very out of the question - especially as there is so little overtime at the moment. I just wish our numbers would come up.

Hope everyone is keeping well & taking advantage of the spring sunshine

Take care all

Hello all..... :-)

This site has been working as though it is running in treacle lately.......and as for the error message..........grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Apart from that, I hope you are all okay. I've been busy helping a friend with her tree and it's amazing how much time it takes. Mind you, I am very slow........... :-D

My beautiful granddaughter was 15 on Sunday - and you just wonder where time goes..... :-S

I feel as though I have been driving all day.........took my OH to the hospital in Liverpool for a review of his meds and then, this afternoon, went to pick up grandson for a dental appointment .............good job I love driving.... :-D

Nearly time for bed..............

Take care all......... Cx <3

Hi everyone,
I am glad that I am not the only one having trouble with Genes. I had the same problem, Susan, getting on to this thread. I am also having trouble accessing my tree through Internet Explorer. I will be really glad when I can get myself a completely new computer.
I have got a feeling that the problemas we are having is due to the fact that Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft. If that is true I don't know, but it could be a logical reason.

I wish you girls would stop talking about chocolate, it is very tempting to indulge, but I am trying to lose a bit of "belly".

It has been very welcome to see a bit of sunshine so far this week, and I am really glad that it has got a bit warmer of late, I hate the winter. I feel like doing a Bruce Forsyth and spending six months here in the UK and six months in Australia with my sister. Oh! it is so nice to dream.

I hope everyone is well, and that all colds and viruses are gone and that those with sunstroke are now feeling a bit cooler.

Regards,
John

Hi Everyone

Is it me or is everyone having trouble getting into this thread.
I had to do it by going 10 pages at a time ,all I get when i try to go to page 177 is the error page .
IT has be doing that to me a lot so I just give up in the end and go one doing my Tree.

I have done a lot of my tree of late ,all I have collected now has to be put into my tree so I cross my fingers every time I try that .

Robert it is nice to see you pop in every now and then,I hope your dear wife is doing well,i do not envy your weather over there.

We have just got our first rains and it was so good to see after out long hot humid Summer, over here when the first rains com we all go out side to stand in it,we look stupid really but we are just so happy to see rain.

My computer went all hay wire on me the other day ,I could not figure out what was wrong but I did find it in the end .
Updates from Windows the previous night had changed the date and time of my computer back to Jan 1st 2002 ...I did not even have a computer back then...very strange ,the only reason I figured it out was the clock on the screen was about 30 min slow and it is normally spot on.

Something to watch for in the future .

Making chocolate crackles today, the Grt Granddaughter is one tomorrow so we are having a party...where has this year gone?

Dark chocolate is the best and add rum and raisins to the mix Yum!.

Adding to my tree tonight so may pop in again ...if I can get in that is .

Off to send another message to Genes....getting sick of that too they should have everything running good by now you would think.

Love to you all <3 <3 <3

Hello all........it's certainly been quiet on here hasn't it? I guess we are all busy about our lives.

I have been here and there and doing a lot of work helping a friend with her tree....I'm so slow at it though...not like our speedy Sylvs. My granddaughter will be 15 on Sunday so hope to go up there at some stage. Can't believe how fast the time has gone.

There's been lots of discussions on here about the death of Mrs Thatcher - very divisive it has been too.

Arthur, good to know that you are back home safely. Your holiday sounds absolutely idyllic......all that lovely sunshine......sigh. Bet the kittens were glad to see you home :-)

Nice to see the Ven Robert again too........~~~~~~waving madly.......hope you are well in your little shell. ;-)

Please don't mention dark chocolate ginger - I could eat a whole box - just love it!

Take care everyone.........Cx <3 <3

Back from Greece having had a wonderful time - everyone was so friendly. My friend Melvyn speaks good Greek and this helped to make the holiday even more special.
We had to visit government offices to obtain a permit to collect and found the officials really helpful - one even delivered the permit to our hotel!! Can't imagine that happening here.
Weather was excellent on the whole, althought the middle Sunday was dire with monsoon rain. We sat and drank coffee and observed the natives - we were in the rural north and people came to our hotel dressed in their Sunday best to meet and greet.
On our last day we travelled in the mountains and came across a remarkable sight. An Albanian goatherd who in addition to a large herd of goats, looked after a pack of dogs. There were 25 in all and he had given each a name. They ranged from a very large old dog to about six puppies (I estimate about 6 months old). He spoke Greek and we asked about the dogs. All looked healthy and were very friendly - after being initially suspicious of us, one of the females rolled on her back and allowed my friend to tickle her stomach. Another dog wanted to be picked up by my other friend. We spent about an hour in glorious sunshine with these wonderful animals and their devoted owner.
I also enjoyed having dinner with a Greek family. Melvyn had chanced to meet someone who ran an English school when he and other friends were looking for a cafe for a coffee. Matoula showed them where to go and joined them for a coffee. From this chance encounter a real friendship has developed and he has since stayed with the family. While Melvyn visited the school and talked to the students, my other friend and I went up to the snowline and enjoyed sunshine and flowers.

Collected my cats this morning. Apparently they were the stars of the cattery with everyone wanting to take them home. They really enjoy meeting people.

I hope the weather is going to improve as I need to mow the lawn and tifdy up the garden. forecast is not exactly encouraging.
