Hi Anne & Sylvia
All is well with me and the girls.
Recently returned from a holiday in Kyrkyzstan where I saw some wonderful plants.
Have not had much time for Family History. I have, with help from my sister, converted my main bedroom into a study. My bedroom is now what was my second bedroom. The aim is to provide me with space to handle my hobbies better. I am now sorting through all the material I have accumulated on my family over many years. I have bought a new PC with a very large monitor and will use this to sort my photos and videos. I am planning to visit Scotland in the autumn to attend a weekend organised by an alpine club. I will take the.opportunity to visit the town where my mother's great grandfather was born
My local cattery is suffering under new legislation brought in last October to deal with puppy farms and pet shops. The legislation requires that cattery runs are a certain size and a Council official plus vet have been visiting to measure runs. I regard the cattery I use to be amongst the very best and this is reflected in it being fully booked for most of the year. In spite of this it has been deemed to have significant deficiencies and changes are required to meet the legislation. It is a postcode lottery as if the cattery was located 100 metres further along the road it would be in a different district where a cattery I have used (and think to be similar to my current cattery) has been given 100% approval. An appeal to the local MP has met with no help - too occupied with Brexit. Capacity at catteries has already been reduced by 40% and costs have increased.
I intend to write to my MP - he has been very good in the past.
Keep well
Arthur

Lovely to hear from you Sylvia - still see a few people pop up now and then - not heard from Robert or Arthur.
I was watching Road to avonlea which is in theory Prince Edward island and saw the Train across Canada series - it looks beautiful. One day if I ever get to retire and we can afford it - we want to do the Rocky Mountaineer.
I have a fascination for Quebec - Chateau Frontenac & Heights of Abraham as well as Chateau Lake Louise and Banff. Having seen Anne of Green Gables and Avonlea I want to go that way too now. We will get there one day.
Take care and keep well - Mother in law not so well nearly 95 and everything seems to be stopping on her bit by bit. She is very fed up now and so confused. they had to take her in hospital a few weeks ago as she had her 4th mini stroke.

Hi
I'm still around, but spending less time on here than I used to.
We're still well, OH doing better than me ............... and he turned 80 last year :-0
Any travelling we do now is all within Canada, by train :-D . We spent a week in Jasper in early October last year, there and back by train. Then went to Nova Scotia for Christmas with the daughter ....... 6 days each on the train, only 1 of which was in a hotel (in Toronto). No long distance travel.
Good to hear from you.

Poor lonely little thread - cant believe a whole year has passed.
I am very guilty of not popping over at Christmas & New Year
Hope everyone is keeping well and growing their tree.
Not a lot changes - getting older - Still working OH thinking of retiring - i am still at work.
Think with the mortgage and bills i will end up being the Miss Haversham of the office - wheeled out when needed cobwebs and all
Well if anyone is still around - let me know how you are.

Anne
The girls are fine and will shortly be going to the cattery. I am spending 2 weeks in Kyrgyzstan hopefully looking at some excellent plants and spectacular scenery.
Was contacted by someone who thought we might be related. I was able to confirm we shared the same 3 x Great grandfather.
I am in fairly frequent contact with someone from my 2 x Gt grandfather's brother's family. We have established that we both lived in the same East London town at the same time, although both of us had moved away. Both our parents had moved there as children. He had been very fortunate to have another branch of the Nicholls clan contact him and reminisce about family members - all sadly unknown to me.
Hope Shadow is still giving you as much pleasure as my girls give me. with all the recent bad weather I could have become depressed, but their antics keep a smile on my face.

Hi
I'm just back from holiday .................. a 2 week trip going to Quebec City using trains both ways. We had a great time, but there was a lot of snow already fallen across the Prairies and Northern Ontario, as much as we have sometimes seen in December!
Arthur ...........
I follow brothers and sisters only to their marriage adding wife's maiden name, birth and death year and parents IF easy to find, but no further ........... unless something intrigues me, such as discovering they had emigrated to Australia and then I can get easily sidetracked!!
Like Anne, I may also follow a sibling if I've "lost" my direct ancestor or one of his/her children, just to see if they might have moved to live with an aunt or uncle.
I haven't bothered much with first wives/spouses except in finding the wife's maiden name, date of marriage and date of death, and sometimes parents IF easy to find, just to give some help and background with the child/ren who may remain with the living parent. I go no further into the dead spouses' family.

Hi Arthur - hope you have a wonderful time on Holiday.
Shadow continues to be in very good health and runs his two slaves into the ground making sure he has every comfort when he needs it. Play with me now - Wheres my food , I'm not eating that , its too warm I need the window open , I'm too cold wheres my fleece. I don't like that programme and changes the channel then walks off upstairs. I dont want to be disturbed and goes under the duvet.
Certainly a little character, glad to see the girls are keeping you on your toes.
Regarding the tree.
We only really follow the main family line. not the brothers and sisters - unless i get stuck and then I try anything to get a lead.
For me i have my Mothers and fathers line , then their parents and so on but not the extended family or 2nd wife's/husbands family either. One day if we have time we may go back and do them

Sylvia and Anne
Could you please tell me how you approach your tree.
Do you track the line of your your maiden name and the line of your husband. Would this include all the brothers and sisters of the direct ancestor?
If you deviate what is the reason.
I ask because I decided not to follow the family line of my paternal Gt Grandfather's first born son' s wife.. Arthur Nicholls married Adelaide Messer - her family is enormous (I was advised by someone in the family it would add more than 3,000 to my tree).
Not long before I go to Greece for a week - hope for some fine weather and no rain.
Hope you are both well - and hope Shadow is continuing to enjoy life with you Anne.
In spite of military planning I only managed to take one cat to the vet today - a different one from last month when they managed to outfox me. It is not that important as it is to get their flea treatment and to have them weighed..
Best wishes
Arthur

Oh well another birthday has come and gone - another year and 18 days older
My OH was 65 but cant believe it - dosn't seem 5 mins ago he was worried about hitting 40 and here we are 25 years later - feels only like a year or 2 ago.
So much has changed and so many people have moved away from this thread - its very sad.
Hope all the regulars are keeping well
