Just a very quick message - My father in law died this morning - so we are all feeling very strange. The in laws had been together 77 years & we are very worried about Mum now.
We are hoping that she will think about the new great grandchild due in March which will keep her healthy and wanting to continue - trouble is she wants to be with him now. She is feeling guilty about not having him at home with her, as he had to move to a nursing home last week. She thinks she broke her promise to him.

Tabitha ............
so sorry to hear your news. She must really be feeling lost after so many years married ....... that's an almost unbelievable length of time!
She has no need to feel she has broken her promise, but I know that it might be hard to convince her of that.
Take care xxxx

Hi Arthur
Hope you enjoyed your time away in Greece
You might be interested in the fact that GRO has digitised the birth and death index, with additions, and they are available to see for free on their site.
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp
You have to register (or log in if you have previously registered) ....... that's in the box to the right.
The major changes to the ordinary Index that you see on Freebmd are that mother's maiden name is shown on all the records IF different from the child's surname ....... ie, it doesn't show for an illegitimate child.
Full names are shown instead of an initial for 2n or 3rd names
Ages are shown on death certificates ....... although they don't seem able to add "mnth" or "yr", so a child who died at the age of 6 months will be shown as having died at 6 ............... and "you" have to decide or work out whether that is 6 mnths or 6 yrs!
I'm just going to see if I can find the death that you mention for Henry Hill in 1894, and if the addition of the age helps.

Arthur
You'd better check George Hill's birth registration yourself ..... I cannot find a birth for a George Hill mmn Britten for 1896 +/- 2 years.
You would have a better idea of the Registration District.

Suggestions for how you are to proceed with George could be
check for his death between 1901 and 1911
check for him in a school or other institution
Remember that if a married woman had a child, her husband was always assumed to be the father unless the Registrar was notified otherwise ........... and that applies even if the husband has been dead for many years
There is also always the possibility that a mother has taken on a child born to one of her daughters.

Sylvia
Many thanks for your info, especially about the GRO
Greece was a welcome break and even tho' we had less than seasonal weather, we were able to see all the plants we expected. We had gale force winds when it was almost impossible to stand up, monsoon rain at night and dense fog that cut visibility to no more than 5 metres.
Anne
Sorry to hear of your loss.

Whilst I am not keen on Danny Dyer as a person, I thought that the WDYTYA programme was back to its best.
I am now looking forward to seeing the others.

I thought the Liz Bonnin story on WDYTYA last night was excellent.
Both lines of her family were deeply interesting and gave a fascinating insight into a dark period of Colonial history - British and French.
This series has got off to a really good start. I may not like the people selected - Danny Dyer was OK, but I do not like Amanda Holden. Liz Bonnin's reactions were genuine.
More of the same please.

Happy Christmas - Safe Journey
Arthur fully agree
Not keen on the people on some of the shows but liked the stories.
Never really heard of Danny Dyer - thought he was good & the story & liked his approach
Dont like Amanda Holden - but liked her mum and the story was good. Dont like Cheryl what ever her name is now - not sure if hers will be as interesting Both of them think far too much of themselves & it always seems to be all about them & no one else
Never heard of Liz Bonnin - but it was interesting & learnt something too.
Greg Davies. - no idea who he is so giving him the benefit of the doubt
Sir Ian McLennan. - love him to bits - hope its a good one
Sophie Roworth - no idea who she is - will wait & see
Sunetra Sarker. I really like her & looking forward to the show
Ricky Tomlinson. I like him too & looking forward to his show too.
Warwick Davis - awful person so rude & crude - really not looking forward to an hour with him - but dont want to miss the show for the interest it may have - hopefully he wont come out with his smutty jokes & comments, like he did on Celebrity squares. It really put me off him.
All in all i hope this series is as good at the end as it was to start with.

Well Cheryl's was a game of 2 halves -
1st half very interesting -
I would love to know how you can visit an archive and they have family photos for you.
2nd half - understood the hunt for the 2nd "wife" bit and the query for secrecy but why go to France - its all been on the telly over the last couple of years & why ask such silly questions.
I love her accent - but she mumbles too much
Also realized she wasn't exactly the brightest person was she - if all the crew were lost at sea "oh I wonder what happened" errr the ship sank.
Also so surprised she didn't know what a Char lady was.
