Hi Christine

There is also this one........but although there are very many Elsie M Jones births in Q4 1914 none of them are in Nottingham. Of course we don't actually really know where they were born though :-((((

Working on the premise of them both being of a similar age, I looked at deaths for Edward Stevens in Nottingham and found 2 likely ones, 1972 and 1973. One born in 1903 and the other born 1911............ so that doesn't help much either LOL.

Name: Elsie May Stevens
Birth Date: 7 Oct 1914
Death Registration Month/Year: Feb 1999
Age at death (estimated): 84
Registration district: Nottingham
Inferred County: Nottinghamshire
Register number: F66A
District and Subdistrict: 6891F
Entry number: 221

I hesitated to put this one up Mary as, although it's the most likely looking one, the date of birth doesn't quite fit the only Notts births. Mind you, we all know that the birth date is only as accurate as the person who registers the death. So, a possible for reference -

Elsie May Stevens 1907 Feb 1993 Nottingham Nottinghamshire - birth given as 13th Sept 1907.

Only close births on free BMD are -

Births Sep 1906 - Jones Elsie May Mansfield 7b 125

Births Dec 1909 - JONES Elsie May Nottingham 7b 449

Bryn

Do you know when Elsie M Stevens died? The death indexes give year of birth and later ones give date of birth. This would help pinpoint her birth at least.

Sorry I have taken so long ... but thanks for your efforts

LOL Mary - don't worry about it. It's easily done, especially when these families insist on giving their children the same first and second names as themselves :))

Opps! Christine you are quite right....I misread what Bryn had said, I didn't see that he'd said *young* Elsie......and have removed the info accordingly.

Thanks

The young Elsie may very easily still be alive Mary - she was born in 1934. That second marriage isn't a second marriage, it's the first Elsie's daughter.

Cyril and Ethel appear to have had a son and he has himself and young Ethel on GR. You could PM him Bryn and see if he has any certificates that might give you a clue to your grandfather. I will PM you the birth details of the son Bryn , so that you can find him on here if you wish.

Oh - and Vivian and Vera appear to have been twins Bryn.

Hi Bryn

Here is the marriage for Elsie M Jones to Edward Stevens. If you buy this cert it will give her age and father's name which will help your search:

EDITED to remove info!

p.s. There is a Vickers Street in Mapperlay Park Nottingham. Maybe it was near there. You could ask if anyone could do you a look up at the main Nottingham library, if you know what year they lived there.

I just popped back and that Walter Kinder isn't your Alfred. I found Walters death in England. That Kinder/Corbishley/Curbishley connection is still shouting at me though :)

Christine2 Report 25 Mar 2010 16:45

Just something to mull over - may be something or nothing but I have to go and haven't got time to think about it at the mo.

In April-June 1913 a Maud Corbishley (note with an o not u) married Arnold Kinder in Ashton under Lyne Cheshire ref 8d 845.

In July-Sept 1915 they had a daughter Margaret and in April-June quarter of 1917 (ignore the quarter as they may not have registered him in time for Jan-March quarter) they seem to have had a son called Walter Kinder.

I haven;t got time to see if I can find marriages etc for these children, and there is probably no connection at all, but I found them when I was looking for Kinder births in 1917 and I just thought that with the Corbishley/Curbishley connection it was too interesting not to note.

Thanks Christine 2
I will check that out but the time of the year doesn't really fit. You have raised an interesting point. There was 'talk' of a surname change from 'Kinder' sometime but that was dismissed as incredible. It would explain no B cert!
Yes sibblings (at least Elsie May) stayed in England, married an Edward Stevens, had kids; Elsie, Vivian and Vera. Young elsie then apparently married a Saxton and lived Mapperly Nottingham

Hi Bryn

On Ancestry for marriages, if you put in the name Eileen Curbishley you will get a list of all those for that name. When you get to the one in 1946 click on her name and it will take you into another screen (shown below), at the bottom of that screen you can see where is says *find spouse*, click on that and it gives you the name of the partner:

Name: Eileen Curbishley
Spouse Surname: James
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1946
Registration district: Nottingham
Registration county (inferred): Nottinghamshire
Volume Number: 7b
Page Number: 874
Find Spouse: Find Spouse

Alfred W James Curbishley Apr-May-Jun 1946 Nottingham Nottinghamshire

Hi Bryn
The only Alfred William Jones birth that would fit the two possible quarters was born in Nottinghamshire - mothers maiden name Gough.

Births Jun 1917 - Jones Alfred W Gough Bingham 7b 786

I have been trying to find likely sibling births of this Alfred with the names you mentioned but there aren't any that seem to fit as the areas are all over the place, and the most likely marriage would be in Wales.

I am curious though as to why he allegedly never had a birth certificate. Do you think it's possible he was adopted perhaps or born before they married? Do you know if his siblings stayed in England?

It just dawned on me, how did you know partner is given as Alfred W? I don't recall seeing that?

"he died in Australia in 1982"

Some Oz d.certs list both parents, but I forget which states do that. It certainly is worth checking out, though.

Tks Suzzanne but no I don't think that happened. I think I was originally on the right track with the 1946 Curbishley/James record. My bet is its an incorrect record for some reason and should be 'Jones'
