New website (hharp.org) and two additional hospitals coming soon
3 March 2010: We are very pleased to announce that in the next few weeks a new website will be launched which replaces Small and Special.
The website (www.hharp.org) maintains all the functionality and content of Small and Special, but will also include two completely new databases based on admissions to two more children’s hospitals, the Evelina Hospital (which is now part of Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS FoundationTrust) and a specialist hospital, the Alexandra Hospital for Children with Hip Disease, which treated children with diseases of hip joint – as its name suggests. Both hospitals were based in London, and the databases cover periods contemporary with that of the Great Ormond Street databases and add a further 13,500 patient records to the collection.
The Small and Special website will remain active as we manage the transition to HHARP, and both urls will be valid, www.smallandspecial.org being directed to the HHARP website once it is made live. Keep watching for further announcements of the arrival of this exciting new resource!
Over 10,000 new records added to Small and Special database
A major enhancement of the Small and Special database has recently been completed with the addition of the admission records from its convalescent home, Cromwell House. As a result over 10,000 additional records have been added to the original database. The Cromwell House records cover the period 1869 (when it first opened) to 1904, and their addition to the database will enable users to track a child’s progress through the main hospital and out to the convalescent home in leafy Highgate.
During the updating process we have taken the opportunity to add several new features to the database: Record Linkage : Search by Institution : Childhood Diseases
Record Linkage
Records relating to an original admission to the main hospital have been linked to subsequent moves to Cromwell House (and sometimes back again) enabling users to easily track a patient’s stay, which could last months and sometimes years. For an example of how this works, log onto the database (you will need to register if you have not done so already) and find records relating to John Bartlett, who was first admitted in August 1881, and has seven records relating to his stay between 17 August 1881 and 11 August 1882. Using the ‘Related Admissions’ links at the end of his first admission during this stay users can navigate through his subsequent admissions, between the hospital and the home, and between the chronic and convalescent wards at Cromwell House.
Search by Institution
The structure of the original database has been maintained, and the same standardisation has been applied to the new records as was used in the Great Ormond Street registers, enabling seamless cross institutional searching. A new field, ‘Institution’, has been added to the search form to allow users to restrict searches to one institution or the other, while the default setting is to search both.
Childhood Diseases
A small number of Cromwell House records contained information on childhood diseases and vaccination against small pox. This information has been retained in the full record display, where it is shown at the end of the record, but it is not searchable.
Small and Special is still completely free to access. The database now holds over 94,000 records relating to sick children and new articles continue to be added to the website.
