Lily never married. She was about 2 years younger than Ada. I wondered if someone could find them anywhere together especially Ada and Lily either in care or as a relative or in another country or county. Were they adopted, was Fred a made up name. As the two youngest were away from the family home at a youngish age they have no paper work, pictures etc and never talked about their young years. I can see that everyone looking for me is having the same problems. The person in London is in her 90s and is the daughter of Blanche and her memory is not good. Hence my problems.

Possible marriages for Lily to Toothill, Ferguson or Grant. Death of Lily Toothill in 1982, born 1900, makes her just two years older than the Ada that Ivy found.

But it sounds as though you know who the three women married. You said you didn't want to post them. That is up to you and I appreciate you might have good reasons. But it makes it difficult to research them without information on their lives both after 1901 and before.

So Sandra, Ada did not marry Mr Ironside - is that so?

patchem Report 2 Mar 2010 20:45

You say that the children of the sisters talk to each other - so if you know them and their surnames you can work back from there and get another marriage certificate for Fred's name (confirmation or otherwise)?

If you think you are in frustration, imagine how do you think I feel. The ages are all wrong. Blanche was the oldest, Ada next and Lily after that.

I would love to find them somewhere after all this time. Not sure of Blanches birth year but am confident that Ada was born 1896 plus or minus a year and 2 years or so later Lily was born. I have looked at any of these 3 as grandchildren etc on the 1901 census. I have literally tried any option in desperation.

these are the Blanche Webbs born between 1891 and 1900 .. the only way I can think of is to eliminate as many as possible , and then get a birth cert for who remains... or as suggested get the marriage cert for Lily and see who the father is on that?

This is how my logic saw it so I looked at every Ada, Blanche and Lily in Surrey on the 1901 census and still could not find a name that had all three. I am now going throught the mind process of were they adopted. I have worked on the theory of first daughter is named after the mother's mother second child after the father's mother and the third child after the mother. All this of not avail, which is why I have thrown this net out to see what others think. I am running out of ways of looking at things.

Or, if we ignore Ada, and Fred:
1901 England Census
William Webb Age: 33 Estimated birth year: abt 1868 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Blanche Gender: Male Where born: Westminster, London, England Civil parish: Battersea Ecclesiastical parish: St Phillip County/Island: London Country: England Registration district: Wandsworth Sub-registration district: East Battersea ED, institution, or vessel: 42

This is totally the wrong family, but I wanted to achieve something! Ada, Blanche and Lily together, 10 years too old, and wrong surname.

1901 England Census
Samuel Markham Age: 42 Estimated birth year: abt 1859 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Amelia Gender: Male Where born: N B S, Austria Civil parish: Croydon Ecclesiastical parish: St Mary Magdalene Town: Croydon County/Island: Surrey Country: England Occupation: wholesale furrier Registration district: Croydon Sub-registration district: Croydon ED, institution, or vessel: 35
Household schedule number: 20
Samuel Markham 42
Amelia Markham 43
Mark Markham 20
Miriam Markham 19
Lily Markham 15
Ada Markham 13
Bert Markham 11
Blanche Markham 9
Hilda Markham 6
Phillip Markham 4
Ellen Wheatley 16
Isabel Gibbs 16
Source Citation: Class: RG13; Piece: 640; Folio: 65; Page: 4.

However, can we recap: if they were born between 1891 and 1901 they are either all together (as too young for service) or separated and not living with parents. All the Blanches etc etc that I can find are with parents or totally unsuitable in 1901. Are we missing a census page somewhere?

In frustration,
Pat

Just thinking about it, if you have the married names of either the other two Lily and Blanche, would be worth getting a cert to see if father's name is the same or in full?

Rambling

Rambling Report 2 Mar 2010 11:02

There is a possibility, as I can't find any births that match up, and Blanche should be easy enough to do so, that their father died prior to the 1901 and their mum remarried , the girls being put under that name on that census, but marrying under their birth name of Webb? Does that seem feasible?

Sandra

Sandra Report 2 Mar 2010 08:49

I am only a relative by marriage the family never seemed to ask about their early lives as we are all guilty of not wanting to know about our parents early life, thought it boring now we wish we had asked.

Blanche stayed in London but do not know her married name. Lily followed Ada to Sheffield. No other family came. Ada met her husband during the first world war, I know he stayed in a hospital in London when Lily was in service.

Sandra

Sandra Report 2 Mar 2010 08:36

No I had to go to archives to find it, one that got away from the people who transcribe, do not want to disclose family just need to find these 3 sisters.

Ivy

Ivy Report 1 Mar 2010 22:30

Indeed - and there are large distances involved between "London", Purley and Sheffield

Sandra, do you know whether the rest of the family stayed in the London area, or did they all move up to Yorkshire at some point? What rough dates do you have?

I presume Fred might be Frederick, Alfred or, I hope not - George, nickname "Fred"!

If they were all born in the London area, would they have been baptised in the parish church as Anglicans?

Did they go into service young because their mother died?

Was Blanch spelt with an "e" on the end?

Rambling

Rambling Report 1 Mar 2010 22:08

Hi Ivy I thought I had a birth for Croydon that matched, but she died the following year so def not that one!

I've not seen that marriage, must have missed it...

I think we need Sandra to give us married names of sisters, as she says below the children were in touch so I assume she knows... it would help place them I think.

Hi Rambling Rose,

I didn't see who you posted - I'm wondering about Ada Webb (no middle name) married Mr Ironside in Sheffield in 1920 and then died as Ada Ironside in 1986; the death index detail states age 87 (estimated), birth date 26 Sept 1899.

Who did Ada marry as I can't see a marriage in 1920 in Sheffield on Free BMD?

Christine

Sandra Report 1 Mar 2010 20:17

Blanche 1893?

Ada 26th September 1896 married in Sheffield 1920 and states her father was Fred deceased and she was 23, I know what is told on marriage certs is not always true

Lily 2 years later possibly a March birthday

Sandra

Sandra Report 1 Mar 2010 20:13

Because that is what the family said, I have met Ada and Lily and the sisters did keep in touch and the children of these 3 still do talk to one another, Purley is Croydon.
