Thanks Janey, I will order the death cert and see if that can give any clues

Thanks again, it has been a nightmare trying to find them all

Well ... 1915 to 1935, there is one marriage of a Nancy to a Blackwell showing at FreeBMD. (Ancestry won't search by given name for one spouse + surname for the other.)

Nancy V Dale to Vernon Blackwell in Manchester, 1925.

She was Nancy Valentine Dale born in Chorlton, 1906, died in Bermondsey, 1961, I'd say.

So, given the perfect match on the name and birthdate in that death record, I'm thinking there's little doubt.

There could be a family member as informant on the certificate. Or, with the exact date and place of birth from the certificate, you could try the local library for a published obituary in newspaper archives, hoping to find family members named.

By the time the children would have married, I think there is less likelihood they would have done it under an assumed (stepfather's) surname, if their mother did remarry, than maybe in an earlier era or if they had been toddlers when she remarried.

**Janey Report 16 Feb 2010 20:18

I have seen this, but was unsure that she and the other children would be under this name anymore.

I guessed I was searching for a marriage for the mother and then the kids would be Bailey or take the new name

Tsk, no you didn't. Everything but the date. ;)

Name: Nancy Blackwell
Birth Date: 5 Aug 1897
Death Registration Month/Year: Sep 1992
Age at death (estimated): 95
Registration district: Cheltenham
Inferred County: Gloucestershire
Volume: 22
Page: 1427

Or did you have that??

**Janey

**Janey Report 16 Feb 2010 19:58

Sorry I did list it earlier :-((

Nancy Blackwell 05 Aug 1897 Eagle Street, Leamington

Both Arthur and Annie are on the birth cert

**Janey

**Janey Report 16 Feb 2010 19:56

Nancy's is the only birth cert I have for the Baileys - I will apply for the other 2 I think.

I have to own up and say I did not know they were registered in both names as they were living with Arthur Blackwell from 1891 and he died in 1910.

Edit On the 1901 census they are living together not 1891, sorry
Thanks Janey!

Janey --

You have Nancy's birth cert - what is her exact date of birth?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 16 Feb 2010 19:44

That's the census info I matched up with that birth for Annie:

Births Mar 1874
Bailey Annie Elizabeth Alcester 6d 642

It can just be useful to have exact DOBs.

You knew that the two children were registered as both Bailey and Blackwell? Was Nancy?

Nope.

Births Sep 1897
Blackwell Nancy Warwick 6d 656

**Janey Report 16 Feb 2010 19:33

Hi Janey

Thanks for helping!

Ok, as far as I know info from the census has Annie Elizabeth Bailey born 1874 in Wilmcote, Warwickshire.

I have Nancy birth cert which matches up with the address on the census, she is born 05 Aug 1897 Annie is down as Blackwell and Arthur is named as the Father address Eagle Street, Leamington, Warwick

JaneyCanuck Report 16 Feb 2010 19:13

I have been invited to join in by my namesake. ;)

Trying to figure out where Annie was born - seems to be Alcester reg dist.

So this would be her birth:

Births Mar 1874
Bailey Annie Elizabeth Alcester 6d 642

But I'm being dumb -- I was thinking that getting her birth cert and thus her exact dob might help find her death even if under a different surname - but that only works after 1971ish when dob was recorded with the death.

That might work for the children, though. You have Nancy's birth cert - what is her exact dob?

Births Jun 1901
BLACKWELL Arthur Warwick 6d 678

Births Sep 1899
Blackwell Fanny Blackwell Warwick 6d 680

edit - aha -

Births Jun 1901
BAILEY Arthur Blackwell Warwick 6d 678

Births Sep 1899
Bailey Fanny Blackwell Warwick 6d 680

for ref.

Thank you SatNav for all your help

Thelma

Thelma Report 4 Feb 2010 11:32

marriage?
Annie E Bailey 1911 Lutterworth Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire
You will have to search for a variety of surname. Blackwell,Bailey and if Annie married then her new name.

Sylvia

Thank you so much for all the searching you have done and I will also look into Rosetta too. I have also found a possible death for Mary Ann Blackwell.

I understand what your saying about Annie Elizabeth, not marrying Arthur and going back to her maiden name after Arthur killed himself in 1910, however I am keen to find out what happened to her and the 3 children.

Thank you again

The image says Married, No Occupation

I'm wondering whether the Mary Ann Blackwell in the Workhouse is the wife of Arthur

If she was, then she is still alive in 1901

sylvia

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Feb 2010 00:55

That Mary Ann Blackwell in the Workhouse is said to be Unmarried.

The baby is Ann Elizabeth Blackwell, not Ann Eliza (the second name is written Elizh, with the h as a superscript).

I cannot read the occupation that is put for her and the baby ......... No (something)

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Feb 2010 22:57

Arthur married Mary Ann, and had children

Mary Ann ended up in the workhouse for some reason ........... it may well have been in the hospital part, or the asylum

Arthur moved in with Annie Elizabeth, but they could not marry because Mary Ann was still alive

In other words ............. what we now call a common-law marriage

After Arthur's death, Annie Elizabeth went back to her maiden name

Find Mary Ann Blackwell! And any of the children she had with Arthur

If she is still alive in 1911, then you have your answer.
