Alice Roath was therefore born Inwood but also used her stepfather's name of Yapp.

OK, I've thought......
I'm sure the Yapp /Inwood connection has solved it. I'm trying to think about which cert to send for.....

I have Dessey's death cert and her date of birth was given as 13 Dec 1883

OOops! Look what the fairies have found out while I was asleep in bed!
Thanks for that input Viv and Rose. I have to sit and think about that one a bit....
I think Alice and Harry are only half brother/sister as Harry came to the marriage with his mother.
Dessey was definitely Bert's sister and was deaf and dumb.
Alice and Leah were definitely Bert's sisters as I have post cards from them in 1907 (eat your heart out~!!!)
Frank was Bert's brother as I have a post card from him in 1908 and he died on board the Bulwark in 1914.
Harry was talked about a lot and I have his funeral card as Harry Yapp

hmmm

I cant find a Jess* R Yapp/Roath/Inwood birth at all for c1882,also I cant understand where Alice E Roath came from on 1891 census, she is clearly age 13 on image ,the same as Harry, but not his twin and no birth to correspond for her?
And I can find neither Alice E or Harry in 1881 under Yapp,Roath or Inwood.

But I am tired after too many late nights(thats my story ,so Im sticking to it)

Jilliflower Report 30 Dec 2009 23:55

There is a story told by my granma that Alice Yapp was in service and the young master 'got her into trouble'. The child she had was Harry Yapp who called himself Roath, but was buried as Harry Yapp.
Harry had three children: Harry, Emily (sho died in Australia) Ivy who lived in Birmingham.
HArry junior married Polly who he found whimpering in the Bull Ring in birmingham in the vegetable market. He went to Scotland at one point to find his wife and was in some way involved in a murder. There was a scandal and the family wanted it hushed up but it was reported in the press (haven't found that yet!)
So there you go folks - a family of story tellers!
cheers

Until I got Leah's birth cert I wondered if there were two ALice's, but the time scale indicates they are the same one.

That's interesting Glitter baby, as the name was given as ROAF on one census.

Nice theory, Kath, but I have just realised I have the birth cert for Harry and have dug it out.
born 26 Sep 1877 mother Alice Yapp, electro plate scratcher. No father given!
Living in Gooseberry Alley, Warstone Lane, Birmingham

KathleenBell Report 30 Dec 2009 23:30

It just seems stange that her former name is given as Yapp and Inwood on two different certificates. Perhaps she just lived with Harry Yapp's father when he was born and when she married George Roath her son Harry took his step-father's name. Perhaps your grandfather wasn't as happy with this as everyone else.

That's a thought, Kathleen.
But don't the series of certs I have prove that this Alice is the same person on each?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 30 Dec 2009 23:16

I'd be inclined to buy the birth certificate for Harry Yapp born 1877 just to see who his mother is.
